MTRCB calls ‘Sigabo’ production team to compliance seminar over violence complaints

The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) has conducted a compliance seminar for the production team of the ABS-CBN primetime series ‘Sigabo’ following complaints over the show’s alleged excessive depiction of violence.

In a statement released on July 7, the MTRCB said the seminar formed part of its continuing ‘Responsableng Paggabay’ initiative, which aims to foster dialogue between regulators and content creators while promoting responsible storytelling.

According to the Board, the compliance seminar was held at the MTRCB office in Quezon City and was attended by representatives of CCM Film Productions, led by Coco Martin, who serves as the series’ lead star, writer, and director.

The agency said it received more than 10 complaints concerning scenes that allegedly featured excessive violence, including fistfights, torture, and strong violent language since the show’s premiere on June 22.

“The seminar was conducted… as an opportunity for dialogue between the Board and the program’s producers to develop a common understanding of the standards for age-appropriate content while acknowledging artistic creativity and responsible storytelling,” the MTRCB said.

MTRCB Chairperson Lala Sotto emphasized that the Board’s objective is not to hinder creative expression but to help ensure that television programs remain appropriate for their intended audiences.

“The Board’s goal is to support the television industry in the development of engaging, socially relevant, and world-class programs while being mindful of their impact on viewers, especially children,” Sotto said.

For its part, CCM Film Productions welcomed the initiative and thanked the MTRCB for the opportunity to better understand the agency’s standards.

The production company likewise reaffirmed its commitment to responsible content creation and assured the Board that it would continue aligning its future episodes with the MTRCB’s guidelines.

Currently, ‘Sigabo,’ which is co-produced by Dreamscape Entertainment and CCM Film Productions and also stars Julia Montes, carries an SPG (Strong Parental Guidance) rating.

The MTRCB clarified that the compliance seminar is part of its continuing efforts to work constructively with producers and broadcasters to promote responsible media regulation while protecting Filipino audiences, particularly younger viewers.

As of writing, the Board has not announced any sanctions or penalties against the production team of “Sigabo.”
