Volleyball superstar and beauty pageant titlist Michele Gumabao continues to widen her horizon as she takes on another field – hosting.
The Philippines’ representative to Miss Globe 2018 was recently launched as one of the hosts of the new-look “The Score,” the flagship program of ABS-CBN’s sports channel Sports + Action (S+A) that debuted its new format this month.
In the presscon for the program held in ABS-CBN, Michele said she can never turn her back from sports.
“I think iba ‘yung passion talaga when you play sports and when you watch sports. ‘Pag naglalaro kasi ako iba yung feeling sa loob ng court, ibang feeling to be with your teammates,” said the former DLSU Lady Spikers star player.
The program’s main anchor, Mico Halili, added the sports community is lucky that Michele did not leave volleyball to focus on pursuing showbiz. Michele was a housemate in “Pinoy Big Brother: All In” and is the sister of Kapamilya actor Marco Gumabao.
“I am so happy that she did not leave volleyball. Akala ko we would lose Michele to another area in entertainment but Michele loves volleyball so much and we’re glad that she’s going to share that love for volleyball here on The Score.”
Mico added that apart from her skills as a player, Michele is also special in terms of her ability to breakdown the game.
“When I interviewed her before, immediately nakita ko iba ‘yung pagtingin niya sa sport, iba yung pagexplain niya sa game,” he said.
Michele, who plays in the Premier Volleyball League for the Creamline Cool Smashers, has already showcased her volleyball know-how and communication skills as game analyst of ABS-CBN Sports. But in “The Score,” she will have more on-screen time as she will be doing features and interviews for the show.
“We’re going to bring to our viewers a closer, in-depth look at our athletes, share with them what’s life out of the court because that’s what everybody wants to know. Wala naman talaga ang popularity ng isang sport kung hindi dahil sa supporters namin. It’s our way of giving back,” she said.
Joining Michele and Mico in the program’s sports squad are other popular athletes including legends Allan Caidic, Eric Menk, and Jimmy Alapag and current stars Beau Belga, Joe Devance, Chris Newsome, and LA Tenorio. Also part of the program is another athlete-turned-host Gretchen Ho, who Michele has fought many battles with back in their days as varsity players in the UAAP.
