Film critic lambasts ‘Kontradiksyon’s’ 2020 Luna Awards nominations, netizens react

Kontradiksyon landed nominations in the upcoming Luna Awards headed by the Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP).

However, this movie is very controversial and many people questioned why it is even nominated.

Phil Dy, a professional critic made a YouTube video criticizing the movie in its entirety. From its length which is two-and-a-half hours, to its characters with long intersecting stories.

So the FAP decided to honor Kontradiksyon with Luna Award nominations. LOLZ. Here's eight minutes of me breaking down the film. https://t.co/g6AueWUKiQ

— Phil Dy (@philbertdy) December 11, 2020

Dy started by saying that the movie is just a compilation of the stories written on Facebook.

“If you compile everything the Facebook throws, have ever written on Facebook regarding the defense of this president. And you just kind of line them up and assemble them into a screenplay, that’s basically this film,” he said.

He wanted to review the movie as a piece of art but stopped himself as the movie is the stupidest thing he had ever seen

Dy blurted, “I could get into reviewing this thing as a whole, as a piece of art, but that might be giving it too much credit. It really just one of the dumbest things I’ve seen.”

In the scene where Jake Cuenca’s character, a human rights advocate, had his wife raped in front of him. the rapist asks if he still believes in his advocacy. The critic admitted that it was the most terrible thing that he had seen in the movie where the political point was delivered through the portrayal of rape.

“This is the most terrible thing I’ve ever seen in the movie, I think without exaggeration. It’s delivering a political point in the midst of the depiction of a rape,” Dy critiqued.

He again repeated the description of the movie—dumb.

Dy said the interrogation scene in the rehabilitation center in Nueva Ecija is where he realized that the movie is all about the achievements of the Duterte government.

“Because part of the film is really about showing the accomplishments of the Duterte government. I guess we should be proud of that rehab facility, it looks fine I guess,” he said.

He reiterated that the movie is dumb because of another scene, a chase scene.

“There’s a chase, it’s a stupid chase. This is a very dumb movie,” he insulted.

When it comes to the length of the film, Dy criticized how the characters were introduced at length.

“That’s also partly why this film is so long because it introduces a completely different character with a completely different story. Whose story doesn’t intersect with the main character’s until about halfway of the movie.”

Dy also commented on the dangerous generalization the movie makes.

“You don’t get to say that after saying that the people who care about human rights are all either fools or just cowardly critics, or actually behind drugs. You just don’t get to say that,” Dy said.

Dy sarcastically said that after watching the movie, he had come out worse than he was before.

“I spent nearly 2 and a half hours in the theater and I can with certainty that I am 2 and half hours worse as a person,” he sarcastically said.

Dy remarked, “I don’t think this film qualifies even for zero stars. This film is so dumb and it is a cancer. I’ll give it 5 cancer out of 5.”

When people realized that the movie with an unappealing story made it to the Luna Awards, netizens were flabbergasted that it was even nominated.

Juan Miguel Severo was apparently shocked when the movie was included in this year’s Luna Awards.

Dale Bacar tweeted two photos. In the first photo, he highlighted the president of FAP, which is Vivan Velez, an avid Duterte supporter. In the second one, Atty. Larry Gadon who was appointed as Senior Consultant for FAP, was criticized by a netizen questioning the credentials of the lawyer to be part of the Film Academy of the Philippines.

For Director Nestor Abrogena, the Luna Awards just showed that if you support Duterte, even if your film is trash, you’ll be nominated. He also emphasized that Vivian Velez should not be the head of the Film Academy of the Philippines but someone who is really qualified.

@asianfestivals even thought that it was just a joke since there were other more deserving films other than Kontradiskyon to be nominated in the Best Film category, Screenplay and even Editing.

@ivangentolizo can only laugh as the movie’s director could only have his film be nominated because the film is about the achievements of the government.

TANGINA TAWANG-TAWA AKO BUHAT NA BUHAT NG FAP SI NJEL DE MESA LOL NOMINATED SA HALOS LAHAT NG CATEGORIES ANG KONTRADIKSYON

bitch, I have to laugh.

@pelikulamania can only laugh about the movie being part of the awards.

Nakakaloka!!!! Kontradiksyon????

@parksodamned even claimed that Kontradiksyon doesn’t reach the level of Nadine Lustre’s ‘Ulan’. The netizen also implied that the fans of the actress were not bitter because the movie was not nominated for the Luna Awards.

@thesuperkayow stated that the movie which is nominated for Best Picture and Best Screenplay is clownery at its finest.

They nominated Kontradiksyon for BEST PICTURE and BEST SCREENPLAY. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAAHHAAH CLOWNS HHHHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

@sk1lty knew that the head of the Luna Awards is an avid Duterte supporter that is why a movie that is pro-Duterte will be nominated as well.

Of course the DDS Film Awards will nominate KontrAdiksyon for Best Picture. Also because its director is directing the awards show. #fapfapfap pic.twitter.com/VDK0XcMy2u

@present_confusn expressed his disgust regarding the other deserving films that should have been chosen rather than Kontradiksyon.

https://twitter.com/present_confusn/status/1337034247022886913

The movie is a political action-thriller that stars Jake Cuenca and Kris Bernal. It is about Alexis Borlaza (Cuenca), a human rights activist who was sent to prison after being framed for the death of his family. The movie narrates his journey to finding the ones responsible for the death of his entire family.

The movie is directed by Njel de Mesa. The movie also stars Ritz Azul, Arnold Reyes, Elizabeth Oropesa, Paolo Paraiso, Will Devaughn, Dennis Padilla, Jojo Alejar, Jong Cuenco, Odette Khan, and many more.

Poor performance

However, despite the fact that the movie is a nominee for this year’s Luna Awards, it had a poor performance. Due to its unpleasant reviews, only a handful watched the 2-hour long movie.

The pro-Duterte movie has become controversial due to the fact that the General Director of Film Academy of the Philippines is none other than Vivian Velez, an avid supporter of Pres. Duterte. FAP’s senior consultant is Larry Gadon, another supporter of Pres. Duterte.
