Carlo Aquino believes that his leading lady, Julia Barretto, has a strong shot at winning Best Actress at the upcoming 2024 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF). Aquino praised Barretto’s performance in their film ‘Hold Me Close,’ describing it as “Best Actress-worthy.”
He expressed confidence that Julia’s portrayal could rival the performances of seasoned veterans such as Vilma Santos and Judy Ann Santos, both of whom have entries in this year’s festival.
During the media conference for the film, Aquino shared his admiration for Julia’s acting. “Sobrang husay kaya ni Juju [pet name for Julia] dito, ‘di ba, Direk?” he said, which was affirmed by the film’s director, Jason Paul Laxamana.
Barretto expressed her gratitude for being part of the 50th anniversary edition of the MMFF. “Sobra ko silang idolo,” she said, referring to the veteran actresses also competing in the festival. “Even to be mentioned with their name, nakaka-dyahe siya. But I think this film, making it and being included, is such a great honor,” she added, acknowledging the prestige of being part of the festival.
‘Hold Me Close’ is a romantic drama set in Karatsu, Japan. Carlo Aquino plays Woody, a globetrotter in search of a place he can finally call home. He crosses paths with Lynlyn, a mysterious squid vendor played by Julia Barretto, who possesses a unique psychic ability to sense the emotional impact a person will bring into her life. Despite an instant connection between Woody and Lynlyn, she initially holds back from fully embracing their relationship due to a psychic vision of heartbreak.
As their bond deepens, Woody becomes determined to prove to Lynlyn that he can change her fate. The film explores themes of love, destiny, and emotional vulnerability.
This movie marks the second collaboration between Barretto and Aquino, following their successful pairing in ‘Expensive Candy,’ which tackled a bold and daring theme. In contrast, ‘Hold Me Close’ offers a mix of romance and heartache, sure to captivate audiences this holiday season.
The film will be released in cinemas nationwide on December 25, making it a must-watch for fans of romantic dramas.
