Aside from being the proud birthplace of the Philippines’ National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, Calamba, a vibrant city in the heart of Laguna province is also known as the “Spring Resort Capital of the Philippines” due to the multitude of resorts that can be found there. Highly accessible and with so much to offer, Calamba is just one of the many destinations the Department of Tourism (DOT) aims to highlight as it explores more tourism projects in Laguna.

Dr. Jose Rizal’s legacy lives on in Calamba where history buffs can visit the Rizal Shrine and immerse themselves in the rich heritage of Laguna

“Steeped in history and culture, the province of Laguna is brimming with tourism opportunities that will benefit locals and guests alike. The birthplace of our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, the location of the beautiful Mount Makiling and the Pagsanjan Gorge National Park, there’s so much to see and experience here. Calamba’s historical significance makes it a must-see destination for all tourists who want to learn more about Philippine history. I am keen to see younger generations to also come and visit as it is highly important for our future generations to stay connected with our roots, which is why traveling to these places has so much more meaning. We hope that more tourists will add Calamba, and other tourist destinations in Laguna to their itinerary so they can discover more reasons to love the Philippines.

The birthplace of Jose Rizal

Travelers who are interested in learning more about the Philippines’ rich history often visit Calamba to see where Dr. Jose Rizal was born and raised. The Rizal Shrine is a replica of his ancestral home which also serves as a museum. Tourists will be able to get a glimpse of how Dr. Jose Rizal and his family lived during the Spanish era. A short walk from Rizal Shrine is St. John the Baptist Church where Dr. Jose Rizal was baptized in 1861.

Exploring Calamba

More than a historical stopover, the city of Calamba has so much more to offer visitors. From its rich culture, natural beauty, and interesting culinary scene, travelers will have a lot to discover and experience during their visit.

Hot Springs – as the Hot Spring Capital of the Philippines, a visit to one of the hot spring resorts is a must for every traveler visiting Calamba. The Pansol area offers a variety of hot springs that cater to all types of tourists where they can relax and unwind.

Cultural Richness and Vibrant Festivals

To experience Calamba’s unique culture, travelers should try to plan their visit around the city’s festivals like the multi-awarded Buhayani Festival, which honors the legacy of Dr. Jose Rizal. The festival is held every June 19, his birthday.

Must-try Specialities

A trip to Calamba won’t be complete without trying Laguna’s famous pasalubong, buko pie. Filled with fresh young coconut and sweet cream, this local delicacy is a favorite among locals and tourists. Various bakeries sell these making it very easy to spot. Other popular treats that travelers should try while in Calamba are kesong puti, espasol, cassava cake, and uraro.

Traveling to Calamba

Located south of Metro Manila, Calamba is easily accessible by car or public transport. Numerous bus companies have regular trips to and from Calamba, ensuring visitors that they will be able to conveniently travel to and from his historical city. Once in Calamba, there are various options for public transportation like jeepneys, tricycles, as well as ride-hailing services making it easy for tourists to go around.

To ensure that travelers will get the most enjoyable experiences all around the Philippines, the DOT continues to put up Tourist Rest Areas (TRA) in various local destinations.
