Veteran actor Epy Quizon confirmed he waived his talent fee for the award-winning short film ‘As The Moth Flies’, which is now an official finalist at the inaugural FAMAS Short Film Festival happening from May 3 to 9.
In an interview held on April 29 at Ebi 10 in New Greenhills Mall, Quizon shared his deep connection to the film’s message and why he chose not to be compensated for his role.
“This movie reminded me that mental health issues are real and tangible. And we need constant reminders about it — both for those suffering and their loved ones — so this film is a springboard for that,” he explained.
The film, written and directed by Gayle Oblea, follows a woman grappling with the disturbing truth about her mentally ill partner. It stars Epy alongside Pam Arambulo, Mina Cruz, and Boo Gabunada. Produced by Creative Kartel in collaboration with Desi Matters and Happy Manila, the short film previously won Best Short Film and Best Director at Sinag Maynila 2024, and has since made rounds in international film festivals in Belgium, Italy, London, and New York.
During the interview, Epy highlighted the importance of maintaining open communication within families, especially when addressing mental health. “I always tell my kids to talk to me if they have a problem. It’s better to talk than keep it inside and develop anxiety,” he said, encouraging others to also utilize mental health hotlines such as NCMH’s 1553.
When asked if any part of his personality helped him relate to the film’s theme of self-acceptance, Epy candidly said, “Ako, mahirap mahalin? Madali nga akong mahalin,” with a laugh. He added, “But I’m brutally honest. If I see something wrong, I say it right away.”
The actor also revealed his reason for supporting a first-time director. “I believe in giving new talents a chance. It’s part of the changing of the guards in the industry.”
‘As The Moth Flies’ will compete at the 1st FAMAS Short Film Festival Awards Night at the Music Museum on May 10.
