Actor Romnick Sarmenta has called out public officials who, he says, betray the people’s trust by bending the law for their own purposes.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, August 10, Sarmenta stressed that betrayal of public trust should be considered “one of the highest cases you could file against a public official.”
“Betrayal of Public Trust would be, for me, one of the highest cases you could file against a public official,” he wrote. “Who, by the way, we the people, have mandated to work for us. When the law, supposed to be for the people, is twisted by the servants of the people—that is betrayal.”

Sarmienta’s remarks come just weeks after he took a jab at an unnamed figure he described as “innocent but hired 16 lawyers”—a statement widely believed by netizens to refer to Vice President Sara Duterte. This was after the Senate Impeachment Court released a list showing that 16 lawyers from Fortun Narvasa & Salazar law firm would represent the Vice President in her impeachment trial.
The impeachment case against Duterte was later declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. Following the SC’s decision, the Senate voted 19-4-1 to archive the Articles of Impeachment.
Sarmenta, known for being outspoken on political issues, drew both praise and strong reactions from social media users.
Comments on his post ranged from agreement—“Precisely!”—to calls for accountability, with one netizen writing, “Those who hinder and prevent high officials from being held accountable for betrayal of public trust are complicit.”
