HONOR Philippines has kicked off 2026 with an extreme durability showcase for its latest midrange smartphone, the HONOR X9d 5G, staging a high-altitude plane drop test designed to demonstrate the device’s structural toughness and real-world resilience.

Dubbed the “Ultimate Plane Drop Challenge,” the test involved dropping the HONOR X9d 5G from an ultralight aircraft flying at approximately 60 km/h—without any protective case. The activation was conducted in partnership with Gadget Pilipinas, with its Editor-in-Chief Gian Viterbo overseeing and documenting the challenge.
According to HONOR Philippines, the stunt was created to reinforce the X Series’ reputation for durability by pushing the device beyond standard drop tests and into extreme conditions that simulate worst-case scenarios.
“Year after year, HONOR fans and consumers push us to go beyond expectations, and that inspires everything we do,” said Stephen Cheng, Vice President of HONOR Philippines. “The HONOR X9d 5G was designed with Filipino users in mind—combining toughness, innovation, especially value. Our extreme durability tests reflect our confidence in delivering a device that can keep up with real-life challenges.”
The plane drop challenge continues HONOR’s long-running strategy of dramatic durability demonstrations for its X Series. Since its Philippine debut in 2023, the lineup has undergone smash tests, helicopter drop tests, and record-setting mass drop events, including a Guinness World Records milestone for the HONOR X9c 5G earlier in 2025.
For this latest test, the HONOR X9d 5G relied solely on its internal structural design and built-in protective features. After the drop, the device was inspected for physical damage and functionality, with HONOR emphasizing that durability is not only about surviving impact but also about protecting internal components and user data even when cosmetic damage occurs.
Viterbo described the experience as both intense and eye-opening, noting that he approached the challenge from a consumer’s point of view.
“I said YES to the ultimate phone drop test challenge as a consumer, because I was genuinely curious about the result. I knew the risks and factors at hand, and I really wanted to know if the HONOR X9d would really survive,” he said.
He added that while he expected the phone’s exterior to suffer, the real surprise was its ability to keep files and data intact after the extreme fall—something he described as “true durability.”
HONOR Philippines positions the HONOR X9d 5G as a midrange 5G smartphone built for Filipino users who face unpredictable daily conditions, from crowded commutes to outdoor activities, while still needing reliable performance for social media, content creation, and entertainment.
The HONOR X9d 5G is set to officially launch in the Philippines on January 9, with pre-orders running until January 23. The brand has also teased major pre-order incentives, including a rumored raffle for a Tesla Cybertruck, which HONOR says will be revealed in the coming days.
