Desert blues guitarist and vocalist Moussa T—a rising star from the Tuareg community—was born in Tchirozérine, just 45 km from the musical hub of Agadez, Niger, in the heart of the Sahara. At just 7 years old, he began secretly learning the electric guitar, practicing and forging his path as a young prodigy. As part of a musical family, with his younger brother now serving as his drummer, Moussa was guided by the talents around him, including celebrated musicians Gountou Taflawiste and the internationally acclaimed Bombino. Moussa grew up watching these two perform together at weddings in Agadez, experiences that laid the foundation for his future in music.
In the nomadic Tuareg world, where musicians are storytellers and keepers of culture and a region where the nomadic lifestyle makes musicians reliant on mini-concerts to sustain themselves, Moussa is at the forefront of this cultural wave. “I play almost every week,” he continues, “mostly on Saturdays at weddings, parties, and festivals in Agadez and the surrounding regions—sometimes even across the border in Algeria and Nigeria.” For the nomadic Sahara desert lifestyle of the Tuareg, these small yet powerful concerts are essential for both cultural continuity and economic stability.
Moussa T is set to release his newest single, “Halas Halas” on January 30th with the tastemaker imprint Mixto Records. It is from the forthcoming album, Tartite, and was recorded at the ROP Studio in Agadez, a creative environment that embraces the spirit of the Sahara.
Moussa sees the guitar as a symbol of cultural identity in Agadez. “The guitar is deeply rooted in our community; it’s cherished across generations,” he says. Accordingly, the record centers around the guitar—a staple of Tuareg music—and draws on the influence of the new Abdalah generation and renowned regional groups like Imarhan.
“I want my songs to carry messages of social cohesion, peace, and love,” says Moussa. “I want my music to speak about unity and encourage peace.” The album blends the iconic Tuareg guitar sound with modern production elements, incorporating the accori guitar, bass, and djembe percussion, often layered over instrumental drum tracks.
It was recorded in the summer of 2024 with his bandmates Amoumoun, Mohamed, Ghissa, and Bibi. And was later mixed in the United States after a fateful encounter with Oz McGuire, founder of Mixto Records, that was facilitated by Moussa’s mentor, Bombino. The result is an album that feels both timeless and timely—a bridge between the ancient spirit of the Tuareg and the contemporary pulse of the global music scene.
On “Halas Halas” Moussa T delivers a modern hypnotic, forward-driving desert blues anthem while channeling the raw spirit and trance-like pulse of Saharan rock. Built on cyclical guitar lines, propulsive rhythms, and a voice that feels both ancestral and urgent, the song is seeping in influence from fellow Tuareg artists Tinariwen, Mdou Moctar, and Bombino.
This album marks the beginning of a new era, with Moussa poised to lead his people’s sound to new heights, embodying the strength, vision, and destiny of a true desert leader. It represents a new chapter in his career, and his biggest dream is to take his music on tour across the United States. “I hope this record will open that door,” he says with optimism.
