Fans of P-pop groups SB19 and Alamat expressed strong criticism online after a recent episode of ‘It’s Showtime’ featured what viewers believe were AI-generated versions of the songs ‘8TonBall’ and ‘Maharani.’

The controversy stemmed from the January 5, 2026 episode, which opened with a dance production performed by former reality show housemates. While many initially recognized the melody of SB19’s ‘8TonBall,’ fans quickly pointed out that the vocals sounded distorted and artificial, with some lyrics allegedly altered or incorrectly delivered.
Several netizens claimed that the song used in the segment appeared to be an AI-generated mix rather than the original recording or a live cover. Similar observations were raised about ‘Maharani,’ a hit song by Alamat, which was also used in the same opening number.
Fans questioned whether the alleged use of AI was a deliberate move to avoid copyright licensing and royalty payments. Some recalled a previous incident involving SB19’s song ‘Gento,’ where the program reportedly declined to play the original track due to licensing concerns, a situation that was later resolved.

Online discussions emphasized that the issue was not opposition to technology itself, but the perceived lack of respect for Filipino artists and their work. Many fans argued that replacing original recordings or live performances with AI-generated versions undermines the creative labor of songwriters and performers.
Several commenters called on institutions such as the Filipino Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers to review whether existing royalty and licensing systems adequately cover AI-generated content. Others urged the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board to examine whether broadcast guidelines sufficiently protect artists from potential misuse of their work.
OPM advocates also encouraged music organizations and singer associations to take a clearer stance as artificial intelligence becomes more widely used in entertainment production. They stressed that nationally televised programs carry a responsibility to uphold ethical standards and properly credit and compensate artists.
As of this writing, no official statement has been released by ‘It’s Showtime’, ABS-CBN, or the management of SB19 and Alamat regarding the issue.
