Actor-politician Alfred Vargas and his wife, Yasmine Espiritu, proudly celebrated the latest achievement of their son, Cristiano Vargas, following his successful return to competitive swimming after months of challenges and setbacks.

The couple took to social media to share photos and videos from Cristiano’s recent participation in the Milo Swim Competition, where the young athlete impressed spectators with his performance and determination.
In a heartfelt post published on Instagram, Yasmine reflected on her son’s journey back to the pool.
“Our comeback kid!” she wrote.
“After months of serious challenges, setbacks, and deprived opportunities, Cristiano was finally able to compete in swimming once again. And what a comeback it was.”
According to Yasmine, Cristiano not only returned to competition but also delivered some of the best performances of his young career.
“Returning to the pool at the Milo Swim Competition after a long absence from the sport he loves so much, he delivered his best performances yet, improving in every single event and posting personal best times across the board.”
The achievement became even more meaningful as Cristiano competed against older swimmers in the 9-to-10-year-old division.
“What made it even more special was seeing him race with the bigger kids in the 9–10-year-old division and show his strength in the pool,” Yasmine shared.
Despite facing numerous obstacles in recent months, she said her son remained focused on his goals.
“Cristiano persevered and never gave up despite all the noise, obstacles, and distractions. He stayed focused, trusted the process, and rose to the occasion.”
His perseverance paid off as he earned the title of Most Outstanding Swimmer (MOS), Category A, during the competition.
“On his long-awaited return to competition, he earned Most Outstanding Swimmer (MOS), Category A, making it his second consecutive year as a Most Outstanding Swimmer at the Milo Competition.”
The family also expressed appreciation to retired coach Manny Thruelen, who helped guide Cristiano during his comeback.
“Our deepest gratitude to Coach Manny Thruelen for taking Cristiano under your wing even though you are already retired from coaching.”
“Thank you for welcoming him, believing in him when he needed it most, and generously sharing your time, knowledge, and heart. Your guidance, patience, and unwavering support helped make this comeback possible.”
The couple likewise thanked members of the swimming community, Cristiano’s former Brittany Swimming Team, and his previous coaches, Coach Gary and Coach JM, for continuing to support and encourage their son.
The achievement comes months after Alfred publicly revealed that Cristiano had experienced bullying incidents outside school-related activities connected to his swimming training.
At the time, Vargas emphasized that the incidents did not occur within school premises and thanked the Ateneo community for its support.
“I would like to thank the Ateneo community for their messages of support and concern. The bullying incidents happened OUTSIDE the school premises and I am grateful to the university administration for keeping our campus a safe and inclusive place for our children,” he said in an earlier statement.
The family has since used their experience to raise awareness about bullying and encourage parents to speak up for their children’s well-being.
Reflecting on Cristiano’s accomplishment, Yasmine underscored the value of perseverance and character.
“Hard work always rewards those who persevere and trust the long and arduous process.”
“The stopwatch never lies.”
“Genuine character transcends distortion & distractions. And God really protects and blesses the good and faithful hearted.”
The proud parents concluded their message with words of encouragement for their son.
“We are so proud of you, anak!”
“Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam.”
