Waiting for a parcel? Here’s what happens before delivery

You order something online or receive a package from family abroad. You check the tracking updates every day. Then suddenly, the movement stops.

For many customers, this is when the worry starts: “Nasaan na kaya ang parcel ko?”

According to the Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost), this is one of the most common concerns among customers waiting for inbound international parcels. But what many people may not realize is that before a package reaches a local post office or delivery rider, it first goes through several required steps upon arrival in the Philippines.

Once an international parcel arrives in the country, it undergoes inspection and verification processes conducted by the Bureau of Customs (BOC). These checks help determine if the parcel requires duties or taxes, additional documents, or further verification, depending on the type of item being shipped.

Some parcels move through quickly, while others may take longer.

According to PHLPost, delays sometimes happen when parcels require additional checking by the BOC, especially for items that may need proof of purchase, invoices, permits, or other supporting documents before they can be cleared for release.

“To customers, it may look like the parcel has stopped moving completely,” PHLPost explained. “But in some cases, the item is still undergoing required checking and clearance procedures before it can continue for delivery.”

PHLPost said this process is part of standard procedures for inbound international mail and helps ensure that parcels entering the country comply with existing regulations and safety checks.

To help customers better understand where their parcels are in the process, PHLPost is now strengthening its customer notification and communication efforts.

Customers whose parcels require additional documents or verification may receive Letter Notices (LN), text messages, or e-mail notifications containing instructions on the next steps needed for processing and release.

PHLPost encourages customers to immediately coordinate with their local post office or the concerned office once they receive a notification to help avoid further delays.

The postal corporation said the goal is to make the process clearer and less confusing for customers, especially for those waiting for important deliveries, gifts, online purchases, or packages from loved ones abroad.

“Waiting can be frustrating, especially when customers do not know what is happening behind the scenes,” PHLPost said. “That is why we are improving communication and notifications so customers can better understand the journey of their parcel before it reaches their doorstep.”

PHLPost also reminded the public that international deliveries go through several stages before final delivery, including arrival processing, inspection, verification when needed, clearance, and turnover to the local delivery network.

As part of its continuing service improvements, PHLPost said it remains committed to making parcel tracking, customer communication, and delivery coordination clearer and easier for the public.
