‘Supergirl’ brings heart and hope to DC’s new era in an emotional cosmic adventure

There’s always a sense of anticipation whenever a new DC film arrives, especially now that the franchise is entering a new chapter under James Gunn and Peter Safran. With Supergirl, audiences are introduced to a very different kind of heroine—one who is powerful but also deeply flawed, emotionally vulnerable, and still searching for where she belongs.

From the opening scenes, Supergirl makes it clear that this isn’t another origin story built solely around saving the world. Instead, it takes viewers on a deeply personal journey across the galaxy, following Kara Zor-El as she confronts grief, revenge, and the weight of carrying a famous family name.

Milly Alcock shines in the title role, delivering a performance that feels authentic from beginning to end. Rather than portraying Supergirl as an unstoppable symbol of hope, she presents Kara as someone still healing from unimaginable loss. Her emotions never feel forced, making it easy for audiences to connect with her struggles even amid the film’s larger-than-life action sequences.

Joining her is Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll, whose relentless pursuit of justice sets the entire story in motion. Together, the two form an engaging partnership that evolves throughout their dangerous mission to capture Krem of the Yellow Hills, portrayed by Matthias Schoenaerts. While Krem serves his purpose as the film’s primary antagonist, the character never fully reaches his potential, lacking the depth needed to become one of DC’s memorable villains.

One of the loudest reactions inside the cinema belonged to Jason Momoa, who officially makes his debut as Lobo. Every appearance from the notorious bounty hunter instantly lifted the energy of the film. Loud, fearless, sarcastic, and wildly entertaining, Momoa fully embraces the comic-book character, delivering a performance packed with charisma. His scenes quickly became audience favorites, leaving many hoping this won’t be the last time they see Lobo on the big screen.

The film also benefits from brief appearances by David Corenswet’s Superman, further strengthening the growing foundation of the rebooted DC Universe without taking attention away from Kara’s own story. Rather than overshadowing the lead, Superman serves as a reminder that this universe is gradually becoming more connected while still allowing each hero to stand on their own.

Beyond its action and visual spectacle, Supergirl quietly explores themes of identity, belonging, and resilience. It also touches on issues surrounding female empowerment, questioning why Kara continues to be known as “Supergirl” while confronting exploitation and violence through the film’s central conflict. Although these themes aren’t explored as deeply as they could have been, they add meaningful layers that separate the movie from a typical superhero adventure.

Visually, the film delivers several impressive sequences that showcase the vastness of space without overwhelming the story. Director Craig Gillespie balances intimate character moments with exciting action, ensuring the emotional journey remains the film’s strongest element.

Despite its strengths, Supergirl isn’t without flaws. The pacing occasionally slows during its middle act, and several supporting characters could have benefited from additional development. These issues prevent the movie from reaching the emotional impact of last year’s Superman, but they never derail the overall experience.

What ultimately makes Supergirl enjoyable is its willingness to focus on character first and spectacle second. Instead of chasing nonstop action, it allows Kara’s emotional journey to take center stage, reminding audiences that even the strongest heroes can feel uncertain, broken, and afraid.

By the time the credits rolled, Supergirl left behind something more valuable than explosive action—it left hope that DC’s new creative direction is finally finding its footing.

Supergirl is an entertaining and heartfelt addition to DC Studios’ growing universe. Milly Alcock delivers a compelling performance that gives Kara Zor-El depth and vulnerability, while Jason Momoa steals nearly every scene as the unforgettable Lobo. Although the film struggles with an underdeveloped villain and occasional pacing issues, its emotional storytelling, strong performances, and fresh perspective make it a worthwhile superhero adventure and another promising step forward for the DC Universe.
