The seventh and final season of ‘New Girl’ is unexpected—unexpected, not just in the sense that the sixth season was meant to be the last, and not seventh, but largely because this new season starts with extremely adorable charm, mindblowing even, that it makes ‘mindblowing’ an unsuitable word for a situational comedy.
But it is mindblowing, and the fact that it will run for just eight 20min-ish episodes propels our excitement for how the season’s gonna wrap up everything.
Arguably, if the series ended with the previous season, there won’t be enough remarkable things to remember about. Season 7, however, begins on a strong note. Everything now seems to be heading forward, but still, the nostalgic sense never leaves, hence the show somehow remains the same—it’s the same show we love, and Jess, Nick, and Schmidt, are still the characters whose lives have been practically ours.
Some seven years ago, the show introduced us to Schmidt (Max Greenfield), a ladies’ man with conflicting characteristics—he’s a douche bag with irresistible attractiveness, not to mention he is also rich, and is in fact, wealthier than either Nick (Jake Johnson) or Winston (Lamorne Morris). Those are some of the best things, but the best of those bests, frankly, is how over the years Schmidt has been making us laugh, and on some occasions, inspire, through his hilarious catchphrases. So by all means, let’s comply when he requests “let’s celebrate me”, the same way we should celebrate this season.
It took the show six seasons to finally give Schmidt the ‘family time’ he’d been waiting for years—or maybe not—and by ‘family time’ I mean having his own family. Three years, obviously, brought the show so many changes, the biggest of which, is that Schmidt and Cece (Hannah Simone) now have a daughter.
But as much as things have changed, everything somehow remains the same. Narrative pretty much goes through familiar proceedings, only this time, there is a sense of emotional and moral development in the characters. But of all the things that changed, it’s the loft that has arguably gone through the biggest changes.
And yet, the change allows us to witness these people finally take the better paths in their lives towards adulthood and the more relevant events beyond. Six years and we’ve seen so much of the bizarre and the familiar, with all the characters going through important moments in their lives like having relationships, marriage, and familiar responsibilities, the show allowed us, audience, to mature practically the same way they did.
Season 7 feels like a sentimental send-off to an overstretched coming-of-age story, and it’s a fitting one. And as it wraps up everything with all the sweetness and goofiness it can give, it makes us wonder what happened to Nick, Winston, Schmidt, Jess, and everyone close to them, in that three year-skip, but it’s a smart choice to end a journey whose finish line has long been overdue.
Creators and writers of the show are finally showing us resolutions, some real developments emerging from a loop of over-repetitive processes—not that we didn’t enjoy most of them.
Three years have also transformed the occupants of the loft, professionally, and endearingly, personally. Winston is now a police officer still trying to find his feet, though he’s pretty much more concerned with his growing family. And Nick, who is, still, essentially the at the center of this story, still struggles to finally bring his one knee to the ground, in front of Jess (Zooey Deschanel).
The concluding season doesn’t seem occupied to wrap everything around with a sweet wedding, but who knows, the one-hour final episode is yet to come. And now, with everything seemingly en route to better places, it makes us feel assured that parting with these well-loved, not to mention, ‘adorkable’ characters, would not make us extremely unhappy, knowing that they ended up with someone or in places they all deserve.
