Can the Chinese Remake of “Meteor Garden” revive the MG fever in the Philippines?

  • Meteor Garden Chinese remake will soon air on Philippine television.
  • The original Taiwanese version became a phenomenal hit in the Philippines, garnering a record 60% rating.
  • The Chinese reworking bears a lot of similarities with the Taiwanese original series.

ABS-CBN will premiere the Chinese version of Meteor Garden on August 20.

The original Taiwan-made Meteor Garden was aired on Philippine television in 2001. The Tagalized Meteor Garden created a mania that would not let up for a long time. It garnered a phenomenal 60% rating.

While the Meteor Garden fever was sweeping over the nation, Filipinos copied the hairstyles and fashion of the lead stars known collectively as F4.

In 2009, ABS-CBN revived the Meteor Garden fever by airing its Korean spin-off Boys Over Flowers. Boys Over Flowers strayed a bit from the original plot but it nevertheless became a hit.

Based on the trailer released by ABS-CBN, we can see familiar scenes from the original Meteor Garden.

Produced by the original creator of the show Angie Chai, the Chinese version will have similar extractions from the Taiwanese version such as signature scenes, names, and the original soundtrack.

But the question remains: “Are these enough to revive the Meteor Garden fever in the Philippines?”

We’ll find out on August 20.
