Charo Santos-Concio believes that the Filipino local film industry is still in its heights

  • Charo Santos-Concio shares her sentiment against the assumption on the alarming state of local films
  • She clarifies that this state is just a challenge and artists in the industry should take this as a reason for improvement
  • She will star in an upcoming horror film ‘Eerie’

ABS-CBN Network’s former president, host of ‘Maalaala Mo Kaya,’ and Asia’s Best Actress Charo Santos-Concio shared her thoughts regarding the standing of the local film industry. Being in the business for so long, way back since the ’70s, she has witnessed every struggle, hope, and growth that the entertainment industry has encountered.

She has gained enough knowledge and experience to know and be aware of the industry’s standing.

Just recently, in the media conference of her upcoming horror film ‘Eerie,’ she expressed her point of view regarding the issue on the ‘alarming state’ of the Filipino local film industry, as it was previously taken that at the start of the year various local films that were released in cinemas experienced low recognition from netizens, as a series of movies flopped and did not manage to reach its targets.

Charo Santos directly stated that the local industry is not at all dying, in fact, it is even improving. She clarified that the incident happened were just challenges and it is because we are in the Digital Era that we experience the rapid shift from traditional industry to an economy based on information technology.

“Hindi naman. May challenges lang, di ba? With the digital technology, may disruptions talaga with a lot of streaming services available, and content that is available at the palm of your hand.”

She added that today’s film industry is even more exciting. Because of the massive availability of technology, it is much easier and faster to make movies, unlike in the industrialized era where making films still takes a lot of time and effort.

“In fact, these are exciting times nga for the creators. Di ba? Diyos ko noon, ang hirap-hirap gumawa ng pelikula, di ba? Eh ngayon, mas accessible na ‘yung mga gamit, ‘yung ganu’n.”

She also said that making films should be rightly plotted, that it should not only be a good write up but it should as well have a great visual. That with the right conceptualization of a story, netizens would surely watch out for it.

“Tapos, kailangan lang talaga, marunong kang magkwento and it’s not just a matter of you know, picking up a premise and having it written. You have to… kailangang alam mo ‘yung visual medium, eh. Di ba, hindi lang naman ‘yan maglalahad ng kwento, na meron kang magandang kwento. Kailangang tama ang paglalahad mo. Alam mo ‘yung mga elemento that make up a great film. Di ba? Ang daming bata na pumapasok sa pelikula.”

The director of ‘Eerie,’ Mikhail Red, also agreed to Charo Santos’ statement, and said that as one of the filmmakers, this is the challenge that they should surpass and instead of seeing this as a threat, they should use this as a medium for improvement.

“Ngayon, napo-force kami na di ba, to disrupt the system, di ba? To go wide. Kaya ngayon, we’re trying to export films, di ba? To find a larger audience. To make different genres. And I think, ‘yun ‘yung maganda dito – napo-force kami to adapt and this (Eerie) is the start.”

Watch out for the newest local horror film ‘Eerie’ to be starred by Charo Santos-Concio and Bea Alonzo this March 27 in cinemas.
