MOVIE REVIEW: Star Cinema’s “Starting Over Again”

Olivia Lamasan did a splendid job putting together Toni Gonzaga and Piolo Pascual in a cliché love story, but still came bold and unique to a viewer’s point of view. A lot of people are expecting it would be a re-hash of the John Lloyd-Bea film, “One More Chance,” as Toni who plays Ginny left the man she loves for a great career ahead of her. Not knowing what he actually did, Piolo playing Marco felt his heart broke into pieces when Ginny had to let him go.

Ginny’s character is an achiever architect, who graduated from UP. Coming back to the university to design a new building, she then gets to see Marco again. This smart, accomplished woman who had left Marco years back in a tearjerker confrontation scene under the rain (Kudos to Piolo for his acting prowess – it was crisp and tight!), realizes she’s still in love with him.

The film is definitely something one can relate about. It is funny for most parts and was carefully done with taste. Toni Gonzaga played a sassy, funny girl who had been eying for her instructor. With her sweet demeanor, Marco had fallen for her as well. The combination of the two would make you feel ecstatic. Toni and Piolo played their roles with sincerity and depth.

The Goods

The great thing about the movie is that it dealt deeper on relationships and moving on – and this gives their audience so much feels. In a way, people had understood what both of the characters went through – during the sweetest times and the time when they were apart.

Toni Gonzaga never fails to pull the comedic strings once again. Piolo Pascual gave the much-needed balance of maturity in the movie.

Applause for the director and her staff as the transitions were so fluid and remarkable. The then and now scenes are done with much thought. The exchange of lines was witty and solid. Iza Calzado (Patty) played the role of a classy, polished woman – and her role is definitely much-needed in the story. It gave a new dimension to the entire plot. Their roles have been well-built and weaved to come around together and make a solid reaction from the audience.

Points of Lapses

The truth is, as much as the movie is a hit, and was greatly conveyed – the trailer didn’t really put Ginny’s role in a pedestal. She seemed too desperate and not empowered, given that she’s already a professional.
Another problem of the movie was that it didn’t pick up so fast. It’s a great thing they took time building up the characters but it had been dragging at the first half.

The Ending

You’ve got to watch it for yourself. You need to see it in the eyes of the director, while for me, Ginny’s reasons were a bit levelled down in this scene. It’s definitely a unique ending to a rom-com movie.
Starting Over Again isn’t the typical rom-com out there.

Sure, it’s entertaining but the soft spots in the movie will tenderly embrace your brain and hearts out ‘cause you won’t forget about it. You won’t regret watching it. Witty banters all throughout the epic script! Truly, Star Cinema was right putting it as their Valentines’ special. No wonder this phenomenal movie would probably one of your all-time local films, and it deserves to reap high profits in the Box Office as well.
