‘Photocopy of K-Pop?’ Janus Del Prado questions tagging of P-Pop as original

With the launch of the group BGYO and the rise of Pinoy pop, actor Janus Del Prado questioned the tagging of P-pop as original content from Filipinos.

On his Facebook account, Janus dubbed them as a ‘photocopy’ of Korean Pop groups. Then, he criticized the musical styles and clothing of the P-pop groups, noting that they do not embody the Filipino identity.

Ba’t niyo pa tinawag na Ppop eh photo copy lang naman ng Kpop. Wala namang identity na sariling atin. Eh walang kabahid…

Then, he reposted his Facebook post on his Instagram account, noting that he has nothing against both K-Pop and P-pop. He agrees with BGYO’s talent, but he urges Filipinos not to push P-pop as an original genre. Janus warned that it shows plagiarism.

Then, he added that the more appropriate term would be Korean-Pinoy Pop or KP-pop.

According to article 15, section 2 of Broadcast Code of the Philippines 2007 (as amended 2011), “Any music which is composed, performed, adapted, translated, or arranged by a Filipino — including adaptations and translations into Pilipino or a Philippine dialect of foreign works — shall be considered an OPM.”

Notably, one of the earliest references of P-pop was the Pinoy group, Smokey Mountain, who became known for their attire during their performances.

Finally, Janus ended the series of posts with a disclaimer that he is only responsible for what he says, not what people understand.

Janus has been with Star Magic since 1995. Many would recognize him for his role as Chinno in the movie, One More Chance. Additionally, he starred in Four Sisters and a Wedding and A Second Chance.

Earlier, Star Magic launched BGYO, formerly known as SHA Boys, with hopes of them breaking into the international entertainment stage.
