Kapuso star Derrick Monasterio, in his own volition, decided to reinvent himself and step out from his comfort zone through his latest song, Virgo.
In the virtual press conference for the launching of his song, Wednesday, August 18, Derrick revealed how he wanted to be a different singer this time around.
“Sinabi ko talaga, medyo parang different Derrick naman this time, na hindi puro ballad,” he revealed when asked why he chose a different genre for his latest single.
The actor-singer, in 2016, released his first album under GMA Network, showing his talent as a balladeer given that he was formerly a member of the Kilyawan Boys Choir.
Derrick now wants to have a ‘party song’ under his name with Virgo.
“Gusto ko medyo parang The Weekend yung vibe. Gusto ko something na lahat ng class makaka-relate, na maka-penetrate sa EP market.”
He also shared the process of making the song. According to Derrick, out of all the songs the producers made him listen to, the song made by Alexis Ip and Zach Yokingco made him ‘LSS’. LSS refers to Last Song Syndrome.
“Maraming songs na pinarinig sa’kin pero this one talaga, was stuck in my head, na-LSS ako dito,” he said.
Derrick also took the opportunity to commend the team behind Virgo for giving him the courage to step out of his comfort zone and do his first-ever danceable song.
“S’yempre hindi naman ako ang nagsulat nito eh. This was composed by Alexis Ip and Zach Yokingco and was arranged by Zach Yokingco, and was produced by Paolo Agudelo.
“Sila yung creative team kumbaga tapos ako yung execution. Siguro wala lang akong courage to try these kinds of songs kasi it’s far from my comfort zone.
“Pero ngayon, you just have to level up eh. Kailangan kong baguhin and reinvent,” shared Derrick.
When asked if it is his choice to step away from being a balladeer, Derrick responded, “Personal choice ko.”
Virgo is a song specifically for the Millenials and how they try to enter into a relationship.
“Basically, ginawa namin ‘tong song to relate to the Millenials na s’yempre way of flirting or dating natin parang tinatanong natin ang mga zodiac sign,” described the actor-singer.
“Specifically for Virgo, makikita n’ya yung sarili n’ya dito sa kantang ‘to. Tapos basically ako yung taong dine-date nung Virgo person. May pagka-perfectionist kasi ang mga ‘yan eh. It’s about ghosting, it’s about giving hope to the other person.”
Derrick’s Virgo will be officially released on August 20 and is already available for pre-order on iTunes since August 10.
