Doris goes to Kalaw, Manila where aspiring Filipinos troop to look for jobs as seafarers and meets Jepoy, a seaman who is set to leave the country this month. Jepoy left his girlfriend in Leyte for Manila to take part in the training.
Jepoy and his girlfriend were supposed to get married last year, but Jepoy hadn’t saved up enough money for their wedding and their new life together.
Doris also bonds with the other people in Kalaw who dream of seeking greener pastures outside the country, including 59-year-old masseur Rony, who was denied the chance to leave the country because of his age. What’s the one thing that will make him happy?
Doris says that even though her program gives away material things to people, it goes beyond that by making them happy and appreciate life more.
“We can give them anything that will make them smile, laugh, and warm their hearts and make them forget their hardships, even for just a few moments. Sometimes most of us are too busy to stop and smell the roses, as they say,” she says.
The so-called “Mutya ng Masa” Doris also explains that the program is close to her heart as it will also bring her closer to the masses.
“When the program was proposed to me I immediately took a genuine liking to it because I felt that it is well within what I normally do for ‘TV Patrol,’ that is, to report the ordinary stories of people. No embellishments, no fabrications,” Doris adds.
