On opinions and facts, Karen Davila points out that no one is entitled to their own facts

Kapamilya broadcast journalist Karen Davila on Friday, April 1, shared the sentiment of former Rappler CEO and Nobel Peace Prize awardee Maria Ressa that people are divided by different sets of facts.

According to a December 2021 Social Weather Stations survey, those who had difficulty in separating facts from lies were mostly from Mindanao (54%), followed by Luzon (52%), the Visayas (50%), and Metro Manila (47%).

“This is really the state we are in today. We have no shared reality. People battling over right & wrong because of a different set of facts. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but not their own set of facts. Good Morning!” tweeted Davila.

Davila earlier shared a quote from Philippine National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal.

The broadcast journalist also agreed with the Philippine Daily Inquirer Business News editor Daxim Lucas that only “people divide people,” not politics.

“And this is why supporters need to be careful of their words & actions. When they disparage, insult or malign others for supporting another candidate – it doesn’t help their own. It reinforces the divide,” agreed Davila.

Earlier, she was alleged to be endorsing presidential aspirant Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr despite journalists being prohibited from actively showing support to any political candidate.

Ressa’s statement was from the hearing of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee on ‘the assault on freedom of expression in Asia.’

She testified before US lawmakers as a witness for the US subcommittee on East Asia, the Pacific, and International Cybersecurity.

The hearing was meant for the United States to help out the deteriorating press freedoms across East Asia.

“The platforms – and the autocrats that exploit them – must be held accountable, and democratic governments must move faster,” pointed out Ressa.

The Nobel Peace Prize laureate also called on the US government to impose Global Magnitsky Act sanctions against Philippine officials considering that Washington actively objected to a number of state leaders– notably China – for alleged human rights abuses.
