On July 8, Kapamilya Director Theodore Boborol described teenage-oriented shows as an escape and aspiration for young viewers amid the pandemic.
During the media conference for Star Magic Studios’ first produced movie, Connected, Boborol reasoned that teens saw youth-oriented series as a way to envision their lives if the pandemic did not happen.
“I think the reason why it’s trending is because for the past two and a half years, naka-lock down ‘yung mga teens so parang feeling ko watching these shows, escape sa kanila or aspirational sa kanila na if only we live in normal times ito ‘yung mangyayari sa love life ko. Ito ‘yung kung paano ako lumandi–humarot. So, feeling ko medyo escape and aspiration for the teens.”
He also concluded that no matter the generation, teens experience similar circumstances based on the teenage shows of their time.
“I relate with them kasi I try not to be judgemental, I mean, Gen X ako, sila Gen Z so may Y na nasa gitna, pero hindi ako–more of inintindi ko ‘yung situation because after all, nasa movie actually, na kahit ano naman ‘yung generation mo, stories of youth medyo ibang bihis lang pero same lang ‘yung circumstances na pinagdadaanan natin lahat.”
There has been an influx of teenage and youth-oriented shows during the pandemic. Examples of these programs are Kapamilya teen shows like ‘He’s Into Her,’ ‘Bola-Bola,’ ‘Run To Me,’ and ‘Saying Goodbye.’
As for their upcoming movie, Connected is the first movie produced by Star Magic Studios.
Connected stars Andi Abaya, Kobie Brown, Ralph Malibunas, Gail Banawis, Chico Alicaya, Amanda Zamora, and Richard Juan.
The Star Magic Studios film directed by Theodore Boborol premieres on July 22 via KTX, iWantTFC, TFC IPTV Video on Demand, and Sky Cable pay-per-view.
