Urbandub and Typecast unite for joint 25th anniversary tour, tease new music

Two of the Philippines’ most influential rock bands, Urbandub and Typecast, are joining forces for a landmark collaboration as they celebrate 25 years in the music industry.

The iconic bands are set to kick off their “Urbandub x Typecast 25th Anniversary Tour” with back-to-back shows on April 6 at the New Frontier Theater and April 12 at the Baguio Convention Center.

In a media conference held on March 24 at VIVA Café in Quezon City, Urbandub’s Gabby Alipe and Typecast’s Steve Badiola shared their excitement for the tour, reflecting on their parallel journeys and deep musical camaraderie that has stood the test of time.

“When we were both starting out, we would often be booked in the same shows and eventually became good friends,” Alipe said. “Even until now, we’ve maintained that connection—so it felt right to do this tour together.”

The two bands emerged in the late ’90s and early 2000s and have become staples in the Philippine rock scene with their distinct sounds and emotionally resonant lyrics. While Urbandub is known for albums like ‘Embrace’ and ‘Under Southern Lights’, Typecast gained popularity with releases like ‘The Boston Drama’ and ‘Will You Ever Learn’.

Asked about their longevity and how they continue to connect with new generations, Alipe emphasized the importance of staying authentic.

“We’re artists who write from experience,” he said. “If people, whether old fans or new listeners, can relate to our stories—that’s what really matters.”

Badiola agreed, adding, “Our music is rooted in emotions that don’t really age. Whether you’re young or old, you’ll always find something to connect to.”

Both bands are also gearing up for fresh material. Typecast is currently completing a new full-length album, while Urbandub is working on an upcoming EP.

“We’re almost done with the album—it’s taken time, but we’re proud of the direction it’s heading,” Badiola revealed.

Alipe added, “We’re writing new material and are looking to release something this year. It’s a more mature sound that reflects where we are now.”

Despite the evolution of their music, both bands stressed that maintaining their signature sound is key.

“It doesn’t matter what genre it is—rock, pop, heavy—we want listeners to know it’s a Typecast song because of the emotional imprint,” said Badiola.

As veterans in the OPM scene, both frontmen offered words of wisdom to emerging musicians.

“Just keep making music and don’t give up,” said Badiola.

“Be honest with your art,” added Alipe. “Tell your story through your songs. Everything else—success, fame—is just a bonus.”

The bands remained tight-lipped about the setlist for the anniversary shows but promised fans a memorable experience. The concerts will be directed by Paolo Valenciano, whose creative input is set to bring a fresh energy to the live performances.

Tickets for the April concerts are now available through Ticketnet and Ticketmelon.
