  • The National Youth Commission [NYC] recently slammed TV Patrol News anchor and former vice president Noli de Castro for his insensitive remarks about transgender singer Jake Zyrus who was formerly known as Charice during the show’s episode, Monday night.
  • De Castro outrightly described the transitioning of singer Charice as ‘climate change.’
  • NYC Commissioner Perci Cendaña called the attention of De Castro saying that his joke about transgender people was uncalled for. It somehow gives more to the detriment and stigma used against transgenders.

If you’re a well-known TV personality, much more a veteran one, you’re expected to be extra careful with whatever it is that comes out of your mouth. Any utterance may be used against you. And as they say, if you’ve got nothing good to say about something or someone, it’s best to keep mum about things.

The National Youth Commission [NYC] recently slammed TV Patrol News anchor and former vice president Noli de Castro for his insensitive remarks about transgender singer Jake Zyrus who was formerly known as Charice during the show’s episode, Monday (July 10) night.

The outspoken De Castro insensitively remarked that Jake Zyrus’ transition from his old persona, “Charice” to his current name is what he referred to as ‘climate change.’ De Castro’s co-anchor, Ted Failon said that he noticed the change in Zyrus’ voice to which De Castro opined, “Ang tawag diyan ay climate change. Madami talagang nagbabago ngayon.”

These statement earned the ire from the netizens.

In a public statement by NYC Commissioner Perci Cendaña, he called the attention of De Castro saying that his joke about transgender people was uncalled for. It somehow gives more to the detriment and stigma used against transgender people.

Cendaña said that sexual orientation, gender identity and expression must be treated seriously and with sensitivity.

He wrote: “When a popular broadcaster and former vice president mocks a transgender man, he’s not only offending the entire LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender] community but he’s also setting a bad example to his audience, particularly the youth.”

Any form of bullying, ridicule, and abuse isn’t tolerated as it will not only greatly affect the youth psychologically, but also deter their growth and development. Cendaña also said that with De Castro’s offensive and discriminatory remarks, he urges him to be an ally for acceptance and equality.

Meanwhile, Zyrus recently made his debut as a transgender man starting off with a new name on his social media accounts. He also revealed that he underwent cosmetic changes as well as his first testosterone shot during the summer of the current year.
