A Nurse, Even Beyond the Bedside at Omega Healthcare

What defines a nurse? For years, nursing has been closely tied to the hospital, wearing scrubs and delivering care at the bedside. It is the image many Filipino nurses grow up aspiring to, and one that often defines what it means to stay in the profession.

That definition, however, is beginning to evolve. As healthcare continues to change, new opportunities are opening beyond the hospital, giving nurses new ways to apply their skills while staying grounded in clinical practice. Organizations like Omega Healthcare are part of this shift, creating roles that contribute to patient care on a broader scale.

This shift is reflected in the journey of Everem Loren Zerna Tejada, Deputy Manager in the Service Line Department at Omega Healthcare. After starting in bedside care and building a long career in clinical process outsourcing, she represents a growing number of nurses redefining what it means to practice today.
Where a Calling Began to Evolve

Everem began her career as a bedside nurse, driven by a deep commitment to patient care. Her early years in the hospital shaped her foundation, strengthening her resilience, compassion, and ability to balance clinical knowledge with empathy.

After three years, her perspective began to shift. While she valued direct patient care, she saw the potential to create impact beyond the bedside. This led her to pursue USRN licensure and transition into clinical process outsourcing, where her expertise remained relevant across roles such as medical coding, clinical account management, and telehealth support.

“The transition gave me a new perspective on the healthcare system,” she shared. “I saw how administrative efficiency directly impacted patient care. The work was different, but the mission was the same: improving lives through healthcare.”

Navigating the Shift

The move beyond the bedside came with uncertainty. Everem questioned whether she would lose the human connection that defined her early years and whether her clinical skills would remain relevant in a more process-driven role. She also wondered if stepping into a delivery center meant moving away from what she once considered “real nursing.”

The transition also required adjustment. She had to adapt to a more structured environment, where success was measured through service delivery, client satisfaction, and efficiency. She also learned to apply her clinical expertise in a different context, supporting areas such as utilization management, case management, and clinical validation.

Over time, she realized that the same skills she developed at the bedside—clinical judgment, communication, and empathy—remain essential. The difference was in scale. Instead of focusing on one patient at a time, she was now supporting systems that impact many.

“I realized that nursing isn’t confined to hospital walls. It’s about applying our clinical expertise wherever it can improve healthcare outcomes. In a delivery center setting, I saw how nurses could influence systems, streamline processes, and ensure quality care for thousands of patients indirectly,” she added.

What once felt like a departure from nursing became an expansion of it, opening new opportunities for professional growth, better work-life balance, exposure to global healthcare practices, and broader impact.

Empowering Nurses Beyond the Bedside

Today, Everem brings years of experience in clinical process outsourcing into her role at Omega Healthcare. She joined the organization as a Senior Manager in the Service Line Department, leading teams across key clinical functions and training initiatives. Building on her experience, she focused on upskilling healthcare professionals in areas such as utilization management, case management, clinical validation, and appeals.

She also played a key role in strengthening service delivery, identifying gaps, implementing improvements, and working closely with partners to design solutions that bridge clinical expertise with business needs.

Now serving as Deputy Manager, her role has expanded to drive strategic initiatives, strengthen client partnerships, and support nurses as they navigate more complex healthcare environments. At the center of this is the USRN Academy, which helps Filipino nurses transition toward becoming U.S.-licensed registered nurses. The program combines NCLEX training, mentorship, and specialized upskilling, while also preparing nurses for the realities of working in a different healthcare system.

“One of the most significant challenges encountered by nurses is the pressure of NCLEX preparation. The exam demands mastery of U.S. nursing standards, which can feel overwhelming compared to local practices. Nurses often need to adjust their study habits, clinical reasoning, and test-taking strategies. Another hurdle is adapting to U.S. healthcare, from more detailed documentation to different terminology and patient expectations. This requires not only technical learning but also a shift in mindset,” she shared.

Through this work, Everem supports nurses as they adapt, build confidence, and step into new opportunities. In many ways, her journey has come full circle. From navigating her own transition, she now helps others take that same step forward.

A Different Practice, The Same Purpose

For Everem, the journey ultimately changed how she defines nursing. What once felt like stepping away from the bedside became an opportunity to practice it differently, using the same skills to support patients and providers on a broader scale. Her experience reflects how the profession continues to evolve, opening paths that remain grounded in care, even beyond the hospital’s setting.

“Today, I see my journey as proof that nursing is not limited to the bedside. It is a versatile profession, and stepping into clinical process outsourcing showed me that our skills can thrive in places we may not have imagined. Nursing offers endless possibilities, and growth doesn’t always mean leaving—it means finding the path that aligns with your passion and purpose,” she concluded.
