Brandon Espiritu, Jether Palomo continue to lose followers amid ‘halfies’ controversy

The backlash against Filipino-American pageant titleholders Brandon Espiritu and Jether Palomo continues to intensify as both have seen significant drops in their social media following following the controversial “halfies” remarks that sparked widespread criticism online.

As of Thursday afternoon, Brandon’s Instagram following had fallen to around 199,000 from approximately 213,000 before the controversy erupted—a loss of nearly 14,000 followers in just a matter of days.

Jether, meanwhile, also experienced a decline in his follower count, dropping from around 224,000 followers to approximately 217,000.

The two pageant personalities have likewise restricted public interaction on their Instagram accounts by disabling or limiting comments amid the ongoing criticism. However, some netizens have still managed to express their disappointment through other platforms and reposted content.

The controversy began after screenshots circulated online showing comments made by Brandon during a discussion involving Filipino representatives in international pageants. His statement suggesting that the Philippines “wouldn’t have a chance on the national stage without us halfies” drew criticism from many Filipinos, including pageant fans and industry personalities, who viewed the remark as dismissive of the achievements of homegrown Filipino candidates.

The issue quickly snowballed into a larger conversation about representation, identity, and what it means to carry the Philippine flag on the international stage.

Several prominent figures also weighed in on the matter, prompting both Brandon and Jether to issue separate public apologies.

In his statement, Jether acknowledged that a comment he made during a gathering with friends from different countries contributed to the controversy.

“I was born in the United States, and at the time, I viewed it as a playful nod to that. I now understand that my words caused hurt, and I take full responsibility for them. For that, I sincerely apologize,” he wrote.

The Mister Pilipinas Global 2025 titleholder emphasized that he is a full Filipino born in the United States and remains proud of both his heritage and the opportunity to represent the Philippines internationally.

“I owe so much to this country, and representing the Philippines has been one of the greatest privileges of my life—something I do not take for granted,” he added.

Following the controversy, observant followers noticed that Jether had removed most of his Instagram posts, leaving only his public apology visible on his account.

Brandon likewise issued an apology, admitting that his response was made impulsively and acknowledging that many people found his remarks disrespectful.

Despite the apologies, public reaction remains divided, with many netizens continuing to debate the broader issues raised by the controversy.
