John Arcilla reveals talent fee jumped 10 times after ‘Heneral Luna’

John Arcilla may have already been one of the country’s most respected character actors before ‘Heneral Luna,’ but the 2015 historical film changed his career—and his earning power—on an entirely different level.

During the Star Magic Spotlight press conference on Wednesday, August 12, Arcilla revealed just how massive the impact of playing General Antonio Luna was on his career.

“The impact was major,” Arcilla shared. “After ‘Heneral Luna,’ my talent fee didn’t triple. It became ten times higher.”

What made the increase even more remarkable was that Arcilla never demanded a higher rate.

“I never asked anyone to increase my rate. The producers themselves were the ones who offered it,” he revealed.

Before ‘Heneral Luna,’ Arcilla had already built an impressive résumé across film, television, and theater. But like many veteran character actors, critical acclaim did not necessarily translate into leading-man-level compensation.

His portrayal of the fiery Filipino general changed that.

Aside from dramatically increasing his market value, ‘Heneral Luna’ also gave Arcilla a screen identity that has remained with him more than a decade later.

According to the actor, audiences used to recognize him through his various characters—including his memorable “Coffee na lang, dear” association. After ‘Heneral Luna,’ however, one nickname took over.

“Until now, everyone calls me ‘Heneral,’” he said.

And Arcilla does not seem bothered about being permanently associated with his most iconic character. If anything, he appreciates how the movie expanded his audience.

“The best part is that after the film, my audience became everyone, from children to adults,” he shared.

More than 10 years since its theatrical release, younger audiences continue to discover ‘Heneral Luna,’ including students introduced to the historical drama through school and their families.

John Arcilla enters music with ‘Ano Ba ’Yan, P*nyeta’

While ‘Heneral Luna’ remains a defining part of his career, Arcilla continues to explore new territory.

The veteran actor recently ventured into recording with his debut Star Music single, ‘Ano Ba ’Yan, P*nyeta.’

According to Arcilla, the song goes beyond simply pointing fingers at society’s problems. Instead, it tackles personal and collective responsibility.

“Hindi isa lang ang may kasalanan o dalawa o tatlo. Tayong lahat, ina-allow nating mangyari o tayong lahat, may kanya-kanya tayong dapat ayusin sa sarili natin, sa puso natin, at sa ating isip,” he explained.

Arcilla is also preparing his first album, which is expected to include theme songs connected to some of his television projects, including ‘Dirty Linen,’ ‘Pamilya Sagrado,’ and ‘The Alibi,’ alongside original compositions.

Meanwhile, the actor remains busy onscreen with several projects lined up, including Lawrence Fajardo’s ‘Beast,’ ‘Happy Birthday to Me,’ the upcoming Metro Manila Film Festival entry ‘Haunted Carnival,’ and the finale of ‘The Alibi.’
