ABS-CBN, GMA-7 use ‘virtual’ reporters in poll coverage

We saw it all on national television — field reporters from ABS-CBN and GMA 7 went “face to face” with their respective anchors during their coverage of the May 10 elections.

Both reporters appeared in their studios and answered the questions of their respective anchors in real-time. It must be noted, however, that different methods were used in achieving a similar effect.

ABS-CBN, for one, made use of “virtual presence,” a feature of an advanced technology called “augmented reality.”

Here, a view of the TV Patrol World studio is modified by including a live video feed of ABS-CBN field reporter Jorge Cariño through computer-generated imagery.

For viewers of TV Patrol World, the 3D image of Cariño seemed real — it was able to capture the reporter’s voice as well as the texture of his skin and clothes, as if he was right in front of Failon.

Anchor Ted Failon and the rest of the people in the studio, however, could not see Cariño since the image is superimposed by a computer.

Hologram

GMA 7, on the other hand, made use of a “hologram” to display an image of reporter Howie Severino.

Here, live images of a person is beamed to another venue (a studio, for instance) through several cameras. The same technology was been used by CNN in its 2008 election coverage.

It does not show an image as clear as the one made by virtual presence, but the hologram still has its perks. The technology allows GMA 7 anchor Mike Enriquez to see Severino, making their conversation appear natural.

Although they employed different methods, both ABS-CBN and GMA 7 were effective in giving Filipinos a more interesting take on politics and current events.

With ABS-CBN’s and GMA 7’s cutting-edge multimedia effects, it only goes to show how the Philippines has gone a long way in its news reporting methods, just like most international news organizations.

    WTF! May masabi lang!

    PLDT – Bayantel
    Smart – Globe
    Samsung – LG
    GMA – ABS-CBN

how come the bigger companies sponsored GMA? it’s obvious, which network has class. it’s obvious, the bigger companies don’t want crappy and mediocre journalism. it’s obvious the bigger companies want GMA. Accept the fact that ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs will never outclass GMA News and Public Affairs and Maria Ressa knows that.

oo nga yung first two, howie s. and richard g. were shot in the other studio to test the technology. pero the rest of the people interviewed via hologram like sen. noynoy, manny pacquiao, tina panganiban perez, jiggy manicad, and many others were shot in locations like tarlac, pasay, and even mindanao…….so anong sinasabi nilang hanggang kabilang studio lang ang GMA?

    ano…..mag-reply kayo!!!!

Kundi ang panloloko ng GMA sa karaniwang manonood just to gain advantage to the ratings game.

I bet you’re dumber than Willie Revillame.. such a naive ABS fanatic!

Sandra Aguinaldo ikaw ba yan? On the first place, sino ba ang trying hard lumevel up at idikit ang panagalan sa CNN, di ba ang GME?

The First Ever in Philippine TV History… ang PEKENG HOLOGRAM! Kakahiya talaga!

well, tingnan niyo naman ngayon… kahit tapos na ang halalan, ginagamit pa rin ng abs cbn ang virtual presence at iba pang makabagong teknolohiya for their news in TV PATROL, eh tingnan nyo naman sa GMA 7, parang hindi ko na sila nakikitang gumagamit ng ” HOLOGRAM “. Bakit kaya?? hahahaha! Pobre Abi!
