In one of the most anticipated Winter Olympics events, Michael will be facing tough competition in the Men’s Short Program where he hopes to at least land in the top 24. The 17-year-old Olympian will need to showcase his best as the Men’s Figure Skating already consists of some tough contenders like Russia’s Yevegeny Plushenko, Japan’s Yuzuru Hanyu, and Canada’s Patrick Chan.
“In Sochi, it would be very challenging for me because I will be competing against seasoned and veteran skaters. Some are former Olympians who have been skating maybe before I was even born. Sa tingin ko it would be very difficult for me, but I’m ready,” Michael said in anticipation of his competition this Thursday.
He has been training intensively for the past several months after qualifying for the Winter Olympic Games last 2013. His daily training includes an hour of training off-ice, three hours with his coach practicing on techniques and another hour with his choreographer.
The lone Philippine representative to the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games proudly carried the flag at the Opening Ceremony last Friday in Sochi, Russia, a moment that surely made millions of Filipinos proud.
