Filipino children are taught growing up that education can empower them and make a difference in their lives, and its importance has been highlighted by “Wansapanataym” in its stories for almost two decades.
Rondel Lindayag, the show’s overall creative head, said that their team puts effort into showing characters who aspire to attain proper education to convey its importance to viewers.
“Our population has a high literacy rate. We give importance to education that is why we always include it in our stories. If you have education, you already have a weapon in life,” he said.
As storytellers, they also see education as a significant part of their growth because they attend seminars to learn more techniques in storytelling.
“We attended a seminar about honing children’s character and we learned that when kids watch cartoons, they do not get tired of watching them repeatedly. We used this as part of our technique to constantly share essential values by just giving them a new handle,” he said.
The technique also helps the team teach Filipino values to children here and abroad.
“The kid who watched ‘Wansa’ before might be already in his 20s. So, we should teach the lessons all over again to other kids and some of them might be TFC subscribers,” said Rondel. “This enables us to show them how to be Filipinos through values such as doing ‘mano’ and saying ‘po’ and ‘opo.’”
Through the years, “Wansapanataym” has shared lessons that resonated with Filipinos nationwide. A hit among audiences, the program has left a mark on viewers’ hearts and stood the test of time.
The show’s influence also went beyond television when a movie of the same title was released in 1999 by Star Cinema. The movie told the touching story of Anna (Shaina Magdayao), an orphan who searched for her long-lost father (Christopher de Leon), whom she was able to find with the help of a guardian angel named Barbiel (Serena).
Meanwhile, “Wansapanataym” continues to share valuable lessons with kids through its current offering “Annika Pintasera,” starring Julia Montes, who plays a woman who was cursed because of being too critical of others.
This Sunday (May 14), follow Annika’s (Julia) journey as she finally realizes the mistakes she committed towards others. However, her search for the man with a pure heart that will break the spell still continues, because the powerful fairy still has not seen change in Annika’s heart.
Will Annika be able to find the man who will save her? Will she finally change and accept her mistakes?
