Home Credit vs. Skyro: Which financing partner makes more sense for Back-to-School gadget purchases?

As the new school year approaches, Filipino families once again face a familiar challenge: how to stretch their budgets to cover not only tuition and school supplies, but also the gadgets increasingly required for modern learning.

From smartphones and tablets to laptops and printers, technology has become an essential part of education. For many households, however, purchasing these devices outright is simply not feasible. This reality has fueled the growing demand for gadget financing and product installment services nationwide.

Among the financing providers competing for Filipino consumers today are Home Credit and Skyro, two companies that offer installment plans for gadgets and other consumer products. Both promise accessibility and convenience, but how do they compare when examined through the factors that matter most to families preparing for the Back-to-School season?

To help consumers make informed decisions, BIZNest reviewed publicly available information on both providers, focusing on interest rates, approval speed, requirements, accessibility, and overall customer convenience.

The increasing cost of technology has transformed financing services from a convenience into a necessity for many households.

Consumer financing allows buyers to acquire products immediately while paying for them over time through manageable monthly installments. As more financing companies enter the Philippine market, consumers now have more choices than ever before. However, the growing number of options also raises an important question: which providers have the experience, reach, and infrastructure to deliver reliable service?

Interest Rates. Interest rates are often the first thing consumers examine when comparing financing providers.

Skyro currently advertises a nominal interest rate of 3.9%. Home Credit, meanwhile, offers varying rates depending on the product category, customer profile, and merchant partner.

What stands out in Home Credit’s offering is the availability of installment programs with 0% interest for select brands and partner stores. While eligibility and terms vary, such promotions can significantly reduce the overall cost of ownership for consumers who qualify.

Financial experts often advise borrowers to look beyond the advertised rate and review the total amount payable, including fees and repayment terms, before making a financing decision.

Approval Speed. For parents rushing to secure a laptop before classes begin or students needing a replacement device for school projects, approval speed can be just as important as affordability.

According to available information, Home Credit can provide Fast approval, with eligible customers receiving decisions in as little as 1 minute.

Skyro, on the other hand, lists an approval timeframe of one to three days.

While both systems aim to simplify borrowing, the difference in turnaround time may influence consumers who need immediate access to gadgets before the start of classes.

Accessibility and Reach. A financing provider’s availability often determines whether consumers can actually use its services where they live.

One of Home Credit’s strongest advantages is its extensive retail network. The company reports that it is available in Over 18,000 partner stores nationwide, making it one of the most widely accessible financing providers in the country.

This extensive footprint is supported by a network of in-store representatives who assist customers throughout the application process.

Skyro, meanwhile, operates through its digital platforms and merchant partners, offering financing solutions through online and physical channels.

For consumers in areas with limited financing options, store availability remains a crucial consideration.

Competition in the financing industry has intensified in recent years, with newer players seeking to capture market share through digital-first offerings.

However, industry observers note that longevity often reflects a company’s ability to navigate economic cycles, regulatory requirements, and changing consumer needs.

Home Credit has been serving Filipinos for 13 years, giving it one of the longest track records among consumer financing providers in the country.

This established presence may provide added confidence to consumers seeking a financing partner with extensive operational experience and a proven track record in the local market.

Application Requirements. Another area where providers differ is in their application requirements.

Home Credit states that customers need only one valid ID to apply for a product installment, along with basic personal information required during the application process.

Skyro’s listed requirements include a primary ID with address details and proof of income.

For first-time applicants or individuals seeking a quicker application experience, fewer documentary requirements can make financing more accessible.

Digital Tools and Customer Convenience. The financing experience increasingly begins online before customers even enter a store.

Through the Home Credit App, customers can check eligibility and obtain pre-approval before visiting a partner retailer. This allows shoppers to gauge their financing options in advance and potentially shorten the in-store application process.

The company also operates Shoppingmall.ph, a platform where consumers can compare gadgets, browse available financing offers, and locate nearby partner stores.

These digital tools reflect a broader trend among financial service providers to simplify customer journeys and improve purchasing decisions through technology.

Payment Flexibility. Repayment flexibility remains an important factor for households balancing multiple financial obligations.

Home Credit offers a variety of installment terms across different product categories, with repayment periods ranging from a few months to up to 24 months for certain purchases.

Skyro also provides installment options ranging from six to 24 months.

The availability of multiple repayment schedules allows consumers to choose plans that better align with their household budgets and cash flow.

The mother prepares to send her son to school.

Both Home Credit and Skyro offer financing solutions that can help families acquire the gadgets needed for education.

However, when evaluated across several practical categories—including approval speed, store accessibility, financing flexibility, application requirements, and market experience—Home Credit appears to hold several advantages.

Its combination of Fast approval, 0% interest offers on select products, an extensive network of over 18,000 partner stores nationwide, a streamlined application process requiring only one valid ID, and digital tools such as the Home Credit App and Shoppingmall.ph positions it as one of the most accessible financing options currently available to Filipino consumers.

Most importantly, consumers should remember that financing is a financial commitment. Regardless of the provider they choose, borrowers should carefully assess their repayment capacity, review all terms and conditions, and ensure that monthly obligations fit comfortably within their budgets.

As more providers compete for market share in the country’s growing financing sector, informed decision-making remains the most valuable tool consumers can bring to the checkout counter.
