Why You Should See It

Beautifully acted and written, the lessons of Paano ang Pasko are too sentimental not to remind every viewer of the unfading significance of Christmas and the symbolic hope it stands for, for every Filipino

Jona’s heartfelt rendition of Himig ng Pasko sets the mood in TV5’s star-studded family drama, ‘Paano ang Pasko’, which marks the Kapatid Network’s first primetime drama after years of focusing on news, public affairs, and sports. Veteran and up-and-coming actors unite in a touching tale of family, hope, healing, and forgiveness.

A bigger disaster looms on the horizon, as a family, already marred by previous unfortunate circumstances, including the demise of the patriarch, tries to mend broken relationships and start a new one. Maricel Laxa plays Faith, who after years of living alone as a widow, finds new love in Jose (Ricky Davao), the family driver. An eerily quiet response from her children, after she announces her intent to marry Jose, could only mean bad news. She poses ready to accept that they won’t be happy receiving it, but what she isn’t ready to learn is the chaos her revelation will throw her family into. Among her three children, the biggest disapproval comes from the eldest, Love (Julia Clarete), whose demeaning words for Jose, are too harsh for her ear, and even to Hope (Beauty Gonzalez) for whom Love harbors some ill-feelings for being her mom’s favorite daughter. Their youngest, Joy (Devon Seron) has mixed feelings, but her boyfriend, played by Luis Hontiveros, has opinions that may endanger her place in the family.

Paano ang Pasko’s arrival feels very timely. After three-quarters of the year with practically just misery and unfortunate circumstances, many Filipinos are searching for reasons to smile and to be thankful. Hope sparks in this ensemble drama, whose familial themes, and lessons about forgiving and acceptance will strike a chord in most audiences who may have endured too much since the pandemic began.

The mini-series marks Laxa’s return to acting after years of hiatus, and here, she magnificently embodies Faith, portraying a hopeful mother whose sacrifices are threatened to go to waste, in the face of a bigger tragedy her family is set to confront. The family drama also features emerging young star, Elijah Canlas, who has recently found online fame via boys ’love (BL) series, Gameboys, in a cute but important role, which Canlas surely won’t have a hard time handling, given record as a critically-acclaimed actor. hHe recently just won a Best Actor’s award from 17th Asian Film Festival. In Paano ang Pasko, he takes on the role of Noel, whose significance in the overall development of the plot, may soon surprise viewers.

Directed by Perci Intalan and Ricky Davao, himself, Paano ang Pasko airs weeknights on TV5
