Experts believe that digital platforms being in demand will eventually make television extinct. But on Friday, January 21, seasoned TV host Kim Atienza is not buying it.
On his Instagram, he wrote: “There are now many digital platforms people can choose for entertainment and news, but I believe that regardless, Television is here to stay for many more generations.”
These experts also concurred that radio would also be obsolete. However, the TV personality argued that it remains up to this day.
“I remember many moons back, experts were saying that radio will be obsolete. Surprisingly, radio has remained alive and is getting even stronger both in urban and rural areas!”
He accepted otherwise that digital platforms beat television in urban areas. But the overall Philippine populace still chooses the former.
“In the Philippine setting, this may be true in the urban areas where internet is available but nationwide, TV is still the preferred platform,” continued the TV host.
Atienza, citing a survey from 2021, revealed that the main source of Filipinos for news and information is still television.
“Majority of Filipinos still prefer to get their news through television, according to a Pulse Asia survey released 2021, 91 percent of the adult population said television was their main source of information.”
On the other hand, radio is the choice by most Visayans and Mindanawons, at 67% and 64% respectively.
In terms of entertainment, Covid-19 has imposed restrictions in production, but TV stations in the country continue to come up with great content as they introduce a fresh lineup of shows for 2022.
To add, out of 109.6 million people in the country, only 73.91 million have been using the internet.
So far as for the entirety of the Philippines, Statista, a website that provides market and consumer data, predicted that internet reach would be at 75.33% by this year. It is also estimated that by 2026, internet coverage would only jump 2.11%, or at 77.44%.
