Olympic gymnast Carlos Yulo has spoken out amid ongoing public criticism regarding his estranged relationship with his family, particularly his mother, Angelica Yulo.
Since returning to the Philippines after winning two gold medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Yulo has yet to reunite with his family, instead spending time with his girlfriend, Chloe San Jose.
In an interview on ‘Toni Talks,’ Yulo addressed the controversy surrounding his relationship with his family and other issues he’s currently facing. “Sa mga nagko-congratulate sa akin, talagang nagpapasalamat po talaga ako. Grateful ako na sine-celebrate nila ‘yong panalo ko,” Yulo expressed.
However, Yulo also responded to those judging him harshly, stating, “Sa mga taong nanghuhusga, kilala ko naman po kasi ‘yong sarili ko. Alam ko kung ano ‘yong ginawa ko. Malinis ‘yung kunsensya ko. Hindi naman nila ako kilala. Hindi naman nila nakita kung paano ako nag-training. So, lahat po talaga hindi ako natatamaan, hindi tumutusok at all.”
He emphasized that he hasn’t done anything wrong to those criticizing him, and instead of engaging with his detractors, he chooses to focus on moving forward. “And alam ‘yun ni Lord. Kahit gaano pa ako kagaling na tao sa gymnastics, kahit gaano pa ako naghirap sa mga preparation ko, kung hindi ako mabuting tao hindi ako ibe-bless nang ganu’n, e,” Yulo asserted.
When asked by host Toni Gonzaga why he hasn’t shared his side of the story in full detail, Yulo explained, “Personal po kasi masyado eh. Like, hindi na rin po para malaman ng tao, ng buong sambayanan yung nangyari.”
He continued, “Basta ako, alam ko po sa sarili ko, sa puso ko na napatawad ko sila and inamin ko sa sarili ko na nagkamali ako. Kinarma na ako kasi mali nga naman na sagutin mo sila ng ganu’n, na…Siyempre emosyonal ka na po, eh. Gusto mo ipaglaban yung sarili mo and yung relationship niyo. Alam ko kung ano yung mali ko, tinanggap ko yun, ipinagdasal ko yun kay Lord, humingi ako ng tawad.”
Earlier, a follower of Chloe San Jose commented on social media, expressing hope for reconciliation between Carlos and his family. The fan wrote, “Try to reunite and compromise with Caloy’s family. Chloe, you both will be blessed more.”

Chloe’s reply was telling, as she responded, “Reunion and compromise isn’t going to happen when the other party’s not willing to do so too.”
