Norman Agatep, APR, Grupo Agatep Chairman and CEO, has formally taken his oath as a member of the Commission on Higher Education’s (CHED) Technical Panel for Broadcasting, Communication, and Journalism.
The ceremony took place on December 9 at the Luxent Hotel in Quezon City and was presided over by CHED Chairman J. Prospero E. De Vera III. Meanwhile, Dr. Elizabeth Enriquez, Professor at the College of Mass Communication of the University of the Philippines – Diliman, will serve as chairperson of the technical panel.

Joining Agatep in the Technical Panel for Broadcasting, Communication, and Journalism are Herman Basbaño, Vice President of Bombo Radyo; Jing Castañeda, Broadcast Journalist at ABS-CBN; Dr. Beverly Lorraine Ho, Public Health Officer of AC Health; Dr. Cheryll Ruth Soriano, Professor of Communication at De La Salle University – Manila; and Dr. Dante Velasco, Chairman of DMV Communications, Inc.

“This opportunity is deeply meaningful to me, as it allows me to contribute to shaping how we teach communication in the Philippines,” Agatep shared. “I’m eager to collaborate with my fellow panel members to develop educational frameworks that empower students to navigate today’s challenges and uphold the highest standards in communication.”

Agatep’s appointment, approved through CHED’s Commission en banc Resolution No. 428-2024, reflects his decades of leadership in public relations, communication, and marketing. With over 30 years of experience, he is a leading figure in corporate and marketing communication, with expertise spanning Public Relations, Advertising, Digital Marketing, Creative Development, and Strategic Planning.

His leadership roles include serving as President of the Public Relations Society of the Philippines (PRSP), Chairman of the Association of Accredited Advertising Agencies of the Philippines (4As), and board director for the Global Alliance for PR and Communication Management, among others.

In his role as a member of the Technical Panel, Agatep will contribute to critical initiatives for the advancement of communication education, including the formulation of a five-year roadmap for the discipline. This roadmap will outline a strategic vision to ensure that communication education remains relevant and responsive to local, regional, and international needs.

Agatep will also play a vital role in the development and updating of Policies, Standards, and Guidelines (PSG) for broadcasting, communication, and journalism programs. This includes establishing monitoring and evaluation tools to ensure programs align with the evolving demands of the communication industry.

Furthermore, he will help shape policies on Centers of Excellence (COEs) and Centers of Development (CODs) for the discipline. These policies will determine the criteria for recognizing higher education institutions that demonstrate excellence in communication programs and evaluate their contributions to raising the quality of education in the country.

“The need for responsive and forward-thinking programs in broadcasting, communication, and journalism has never been greater,” Agatep said. “In a time when misinformation and disinformation abound, and as emerging technologies like AI reshape the way we share information, it is critical to equip students with the tools to meet these challenges while fostering ethical, impactful communication.”

As a lecturer at Ateneo de Manila University, where he teaches Public Relations and Strategic Planning, Agatep has dedicated himself to preparing the next generation of communication professionals.

I look forward to working closely with CHED and my fellow panel members to nurture the future leaders of the communication industry. By instilling strong values and critical thinking, we can empower students to create meaningful contributions that advance the field and our society,” Agatep concluded.
