Starring Dassler, Phileas Heyblom and August Diehl, this drama thriller tells the gripping true story of the brilliant and courageous 39-year-old theologian who dared to stand against Nazism.
Beloved by movie audiences, “Bonhoeffer: Pastor. Spy. Assassin.,” released in the United States in November last year, holds a 92% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and an A Cinemascore.
Trusted movie industry website Variety was impressed by both the film’s director and lead actor. “Komarnicki skillfully utilizes a time-tripping structure to trace Bonhoeffer’s evolution from pampered child of a well-to-do family to political prisoner held captive in the SS barracks at the Buchenwald concentration camp,” they wrote of Komarnicki. Of Dassler, they said, “Dassler shrewdly portrays Bonhoeffer with carefully calibrated measures of zeal, sincerity, boldness and, on occasion, terror.”
Movieweb also praised Dassler, who they said “superbly emoted” dramatic scenes, such as those while Bonhoeffer is in prison. “This is an unabashed faith-based story, but you don’t have to be religious or a Christian to empathize with its universal themes.”
Movie review website HeyUGuys ended their review with a promising, “Overall, ‘Bonhoeffer: Pastor. Spy. Assassin.’ succeeds in painting a respectful and nuanced portrait of a man whose convictions led him down a path of dangerous resistance.”
