So what if skincare is “feminine”?

Why is it that the moment a man starts using skincare, people question his masculinity? In a patriarchal and conservative society like the Philippines, when a man begins to use skincare, he would be suddenly labeled as “girly,” “metrosexual,” or “too vain.” But why has men’s basic grooming become so controversial?

This mindset isn’t just outdated –– it’s rooted in sexism. “Girly” hobbies have long been considered inferior to their male counterparts. We’ve seen it in how boyband fangirls are seen as “crazy” and “rabid” and yet equally enthusiastic male sports fans are called “passionate” and “loyal.”

But skincare has always been essential for everyone, regardless of gender identity. And here’s why:

Breaking the Stigma Around Men and Skincare
For decades, men have avoided using skincare because some advertisements convinced them it would make them “sissies.” But here’s the reality: everyone has skin and they should take care of it. And taking care of it isn’t a luxury, a passing trend, or something groundbreaking for a man to do –– it’s just basic grooming.

The extra time spent grooming yourself in the morning can do you wonders. For example, quickly washing your face with a reliable facial wash can cleanse your face from excess dirt and oil. A moisturizer can help you make your skin look more smooth and supple. Lastly, sunblock can protect your skin from the sun’s harsh rays.

These grooming steps don’t just make you look good, they also make you feel good. After all, you are taking the extra time to give yourself a confidence boost every morning. By feeling more confident, you can also gain the attention and respect you deserve from anyone, be it total strangers or peers.

Why healthy skin is a sign of good health

Some men may think they’re “manlier” if they avoid using skincare because it’s “too girly.” But honestly, that’s just doing them more harm than good. After all, healthy skin is also a sign of good health. As the body’s largest organ, the skin shields you from bacteria, pollution, and environmental stressors. Hence, poorly maintained skin can indicate that a person is neglecting their overall health and wellness.

Men also have their own unique skin needs. Testosterone makes skin thicker and oilier, causing it to become prone to acne and clogged pores. Shaving also poses its own challenges as it leads to irritation, razor bumps, and ingrown hairs.

Dewha recognizes these concerns and has since incorporated a multi-action skincare approach into all its offerings. Through its unique approach to gender-neutral skincare, Dewha is sending out this clear message: anyone and everyone should prioritize their skin’s health.

Normalizing Skincare for Men

The good news? The perception of men using skincare is now changing. More men are realizing that taking care of their skin isn’t a threat to their masculinity — it’s just smart self-care. Many are also introduced to skincare by their partners, turning it into a shared routine rather than a gendered one.

Even male public figures are stepping up to challenge outdated gender norms. The stars often use social media to spark discussions on why men should invest in their skincare because they too deserve to look after the skin’s health and feel good about themselves everyday.

Beyond normalizing men’s skincare, Dewha believes in the power of gender-neutral self-care. After all, everyone –– regardless of gender –– deserves to have healthy skin and access to skincare solutions to make that happen.

The Best Time to Start is Now

Healthy skin is an investment worth making early on. After all, it’s easier to maintain than to repair damage later. Skincare isn’t about vanity; it’s about respecting your body. If you shower, brush your teeth, and wear deodorant, why should skincare be any different?

So, if you’ve been avoiding skincare because of outdated gender norms, it’s time to let that go. Because in the end, having damaged skin isn’t a symbol of your unbreakable masculinity. So what if skincare is feminine? Self-confidence and better skin health know no bounds.
