Jose Miguel is back to pull at people’s heartstrings with ‘Dalawa’, his first Filipino-language single and first release under independent label Underdog Music Philippines.
A track that brings Jose Miguel’s vulnerability to the forefront, ‘Dalawa’ takes listeners along on a ride through the turbulent ups and downs of a strained relationship. Though a distinct step outside the more classic jazz of his album 5 Star Overthinker, the song does not leave listeners lacking for soul.
“I actually wrote this during the whole 5 Star album, and I’ve been itching to release this for quite some time,” he reveals. “I just never thought it would fit in the previous catalog. So, now that I was able to step back, it felt like it was time the song got to see the light of day.”
With ‘Dalawa’, Jose Miguel wants the world to know that he is an artist who welcomes change and new experiences as he grows. It’s the first of his forays into a new era with his music, where he intends to focus more on pure storytelling and being more experimental while keeping it simple, as he breaks through his inhibitions and goes no-holds-barred in expressing more raw feelings that people can resonate with. “I’m finding out more about myself as I write and just let myself be honest. There’s so much honesty in these songs, and I allow my music to change and grow as I do.”
Entering this phase has helped him understand his creative capabilities further, and also allowed him to work with people who enhance his knowledge on how to put his music out. “I wouldn’t have been able to do it without these people. I’m excited for what’s to come because you get to take a peek into my vulnerable side, which I’ve always had a difficult time expressing. Songs of heartbreak, songs of love, ‘dart sa heart’ stuff. I just want to try out new things while being authentic and not doing things that aren’t me. So, if you hear me release something, that’s definitely me.”
‘Dalawa’ is out on major streaming platforms.
