The world was introduced to Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Mamoru Hosoda newest animated film, Scarlet, at the 82nd Venice Film Festival on September 4. Scarlet tells the story of a princess from the past who travels to the afterlife after a violent attempt at revenge failed. She encounters a modern-day man whose compassion challenges her thirst for vengeance. Confronted by her nemesis, she must decide: cling to hatred, or discover a life beyond revenge.

Director Hosoda wants to send a message of love through the film, having had the inspiration for Scarlet after looking at the state of the world post-pandemic. “As we witness heartbreaking conflicts around the world, I believe that finding love and choosing to live together in unity is what will lead us towards something better. That’s why I want to share this new film with the world — now more than ever,” he says.
