Applied Learning: A Catalyst for Growth in the Philippine HIMS Sector

The Healthcare Information Management Services (HIMS) sector in the Philippines is navigating significant disruptions, making strategic talent development crucial for sustained growth.

Dr. Salin Kataria talks about applied learning during an industry conference at Shangri-La The Fort in Taguig.

Dr. Salin Kataria, Managing Director for Clinical Operations at Carelon Global Solutions Philippines and a current board member of the Healthcare Information Management Association of the Philippines (HIMAP), emphasizes that adapting talent strategies is essential as the sector reached $4.2 billion in revenue in 2024 and employs approximately 190,000 professionals. The industry is expected to continue expanding at a 9% annual growth rate through 2028.

The strengths of the Philippine HIMS sector lie in its world-class talent pool and the proven expertise of Filipino professionals, which collectively deliver exceptional value to global healthcare clients.

However, the sector faces a “triple-layered wave of disruption” including AI and automation advancements, geopolitical developments, and evolving market trends that necessitate future-proofing strategies.

To confront these challenges, Dr. Kataria stresses the importance of transitioning from traditional upskilling to applied learning, which facilitates the practical application of skills in real-world scenarios.

“Applied learning elevates skills to the point where they can address real-time challenges,” states Dr. Kataria.

Without effective talent initiatives, a global talent shortage could potentially result in a $8.5 trillion dent in annual revenues by 2030, as suggested by consulting firm Korn Ferry.

Carelon Global Solutions addresses applied learning through its Clinical Advancement University, empowering nurses with critical skills to provide value-based care and conduct complex reviews.

A pilot implementation showed a 21% increase in assessment and skills scores after nurses participated in online modules, received mentorship, and engaged in scenario-based practice. This led to improved structured thinking among participants.

“HIMS companies should replicate this success by designing training programs based on actual cases and ongoing team evaluations,” advises Dr. Kataria. “Blending online learning with mentorship has been effective in integrating learnings into daily operations.”

Dr. Kataria also recommends empowering teams to safely explore cost-effective alternatives and encourages leaders to transparently communicate achievements, motivating associates to recognize their progress.
