BPI AIA expands medical and life protection for freelancers and gig workers

As more Filipinos embrace freelancing and self-employment, BPI AIA is expanding access to medical and life protection offerings for freelancers and gig workers who may not always have employer-sponsored medical benefits to rely on.

For many independent workers—from virtual assistants and online sellers to ride-hailing drivers and creative professionals—access to consistent healthcare coverage remains a growing concern. While HMOs and PhilHealth provide a level of support, medical emergencies, hospitalization, and critical illnesses can still lead to significant out-of-pocket expenses.

Through our Medical Solutions available through BPI AIA Future Ready and BPI AIA Aspire, customers can access hospitalization and healthcare benefits alongside life insurance coverage, helping them prepare for both immediate medical needs and long-term financial goals.

“Today’s workforce looks very different from what it did years ago. More Filipinos are building careers outside traditional employment, but their need for medical and life protection remains just as important,” said Karen Custodia, BPI AIA Chief Executive Officer. “As the workforce continues to evolve, For many independent workers—from virtual assistants and online sellers to ride-hailing drivers and creative professionals—access to consistent healthcare coverage remains a growing concern.”

BPI AIA’s, Medical Solutions offerings are designed to supplement existing HMO and PhilHealth coverage or provide additional financial support for those without employer-sponsored medical benefits altogether. While HMOs and PhilHealth can help cover consultations, outpatient care, and portions of hospitalization costs, many Filipinos remain vulnerable to larger expenses brought about by critical illnesses, surgeries, ICU confinement, and long-term recovery.

The plans provide coverage for hospital confinement, surgical procedures, critical care, emergency treatment, and recovery support, on top of their life insurance protection.

BPI AIA also emphasized that the offerings are designed with long-term value in mind—an important consideration for workers whose income streams and career paths may evolve over time. Customers can choose from different levels of medical coverage based on their needs and budget, while keeping protection in place regardless of employment changes.

The medical rider is renewable up to age 80, while life insurance coverage may extend up to age 100. This ensures customers have continuous protection through different life stages, from building their careers to supporting their families and planning for the future.

For freelancers and self-employed Filipinos, the need for healthcare and financial preparedness often becomes more apparent during moments of uncertainty.

“When you work independently, a medical emergency doesn’t just affect your health. It can also disrupt your income and long-term plans,” Custodia added. “That’s why having the right protection matters. It helps people stay financially prepared while continuing to pursue their goals.”

The company hopes the initiative will encourage more Filipinos to view medical and life protection not as a luxury, but as an essential part of financial readiness regardless of employment type.
