Review: ‘Disclosure Day’, Steven Spielberg’s thought-provoking alien thriller chooses curiosity over spectacle

“What if someone proved we weren’t alone?”

That question drives Steven Spielberg’s latest science-fiction thriller, ‘Disclosure Day’, a film that feels like a return to the filmmaker’s classic chase-and-conspiracy adventures while still attempting to tackle larger questions about faith, truth, and humanity’s place in the universe.

For viewers expecting an action-heavy alien invasion blockbuster, ‘Disclosure Day’ may come as a surprise. While the film contains moments of suspense and urgency, Spielberg is far more interested in the mystery surrounding extraterrestrial life than explosive battles or large-scale destruction.

At its core, the film follows ordinary people caught in an extraordinary situation as they uncover secrets that could fundamentally change humanity’s understanding of reality. The premise is undeniably compelling, and Spielberg knows exactly how to keep audiences invested. Curiosity becomes the film’s greatest weapon. From the opening scenes, viewers are pulled into a mystery that continuously expands, creating the feeling of falling deeper and deeper into a rabbit hole.

The film’s strongest asset is its ability to generate intrigue. Even when the narrative becomes intentionally vague, there is always enough momentum to keep audiences engaged. Every revelation raises new questions, and just when the story seems ready to provide answers, it reaches for something even bigger.

Emily Blunt delivers what may be the best performance of her career. As a weather forecaster drawn into the center of the mystery, she carries much of the film’s emotional weight. Blunt communicates volumes through subtle expressions and reactions, often conveying more through silence than dialogue. The role gives her far more to do than the typical blockbuster heroine, and she rises to the challenge beautifully.

Josh O’Connor provides a steady presence as a whistleblower desperate to expose the truth, while the supporting cast delivers solid performances throughout. Among them, Colman Domingo stands out despite limited screen time, bringing gravitas and charisma whenever he appears.

Visually, Spielberg remains a master craftsman. The film is filled with cinematic compositions, mesmerizing camera movements, and suspenseful sequences that showcase why he remains one of the most influential filmmakers working today. The score evokes classic Hollywood thrillers, adding a sense of mystery and anticipation to nearly every scene.

However, ‘Disclosure Day’ is not without flaws.

The biggest issue lies in its narrative focus. The film spends significant time exploring psychic phenomena, mind control, and questions of faith, themes that sometimes feel disconnected from the alien mythology at the center of the story. When Spielberg finally dives into familiar UFO territory, much of it feels derivative. Crop circles, government conspiracies, and secret extraterrestrial cover-ups have all been explored before—and often with greater impact in previous films, including some of Spielberg’s own classics.

At times, the movie feels like a collection of ideas borrowed from various alien-themed films and stitched together into a single narrative. The concepts are interesting individually, but they do not always form a cohesive whole.

The film’s exploration of religion and faith is ambitious, particularly its suggestion that the confirmation of extraterrestrial life could challenge humanity’s belief systems. Yet these ideas occasionally feel underdeveloped or delivered too bluntly. Spielberg asks fascinating questions but does not always provide satisfying dramatic answers.

Audiences expecting spectacular alien encounters may also leave disappointed. Despite the film’s premise, the extraterrestrials themselves remain largely absent for much of the runtime. The focus remains firmly on human reactions, conspiracies, and philosophical debates rather than alien action.

Even so, ‘Disclosure Day’ succeeds where many modern blockbusters fail: it leaves audiences thinking. Beneath its thriller mechanics lies a sincere examination of curiosity, belief, and the search for truth. Spielberg is less interested in whether aliens exist than in how humanity would react if their existence were finally confirmed.

The film’s final act reaches for something grand, hopeful, and deeply human. While the ending may feel anticlimactic for some viewers, its thematic ambitions are undeniable. Rather than delivering easy answers, Spielberg leaves audiences contemplating questions that linger long after the credits roll.

‘Disclosure Day’ may not rank among Spielberg’s greatest science-fiction achievements, nor does it reinvent the alien genre. But it remains a highly entertaining, thought-provoking thriller anchored by a remarkable Emily Blunt performance and a filmmaker still fascinated by humanity’s endless capacity for wonder.
