REVIEW: ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is Tom Holland’s strongest outing yet

Four years after the emotional ending of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, Peter Parker returns for a fresh chapter in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’—a film that raises the stakes not only through bigger action sequences, but through a more intimate and emotionally grounded story.

After watching the film during an advance screening at SCREENX, SM Mall of Asia, courtesy of SM Cinemas and Columbia Pictures, one thing became clear: this is easily Tom Holland’s best ‘Spider-Man’ movie to date.

The film picks up after Peter’s heartbreaking decision in ‘No Way Home’ to erase himself from everyone’s memory in order to save the world. As a result, MJ (Zendaya), Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon), and everyone else who once knew him have forgotten who Peter Parker is. With no one left to remember his sacrifices, Peter is forced to build a new life while carrying the burden of being Spider-Man completely on his own.

Director Destin Daniel Cretton gives the franchise a more mature direction without losing the heart that has made Holland’s version of Spider-Man so beloved. Peter remains kind, selfless, and relatable, but the loneliness he experiences now gives the character greater emotional depth. Rather than relying solely on spectacle, the film spends time exploring the personal cost of being a superhero.

One of the film’s most interesting developments is Peter’s continuing biological mutation, which introduces new abilities including organic web-shooters, heightened senses, and increased agility. The storyline feels like a natural evolution for the character while subtly laying groundwork for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s next phase, particularly with the eventual arrival of the X-Men and the road toward Avengers: Doomsday.

Fortunately, the emotional storytelling never comes at the expense of the action. The fight sequences are among the strongest in the Spider-Man franchise, featuring dynamic choreography, creative set pieces, and thrilling visual effects. Every battle feels purposeful and advances Peter’s journey instead of existing merely for spectacle.

Despite its impressive ensemble cast, the movie never loses sight of its main character. Tom Holland delivers arguably his finest performance as Spider-Man, balancing humor, vulnerability, and heroism with remarkable confidence. Zendaya and Jacob Batalon continue to provide emotional anchors for Peter’s story, while newcomers and returning Marvel favorites—including Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, Michael Mando, Tramell Tillman, and Mark Ruffalo—all contribute meaningfully without overshadowing the film’s central narrative.

Among the standout additions is Jon Bernthal’s Punisher, whose morally uncompromising worldview creates an entertaining contrast with Spider-Man’s unwavering belief in doing the right thing. Their interactions inject parts of the movie with the energy of a buddy-cop adventure while also highlighting Peter’s compassion. Meanwhile, Bruce Banner’s Hulk is finally allowed to feel intimidating again, delivering one of the film’s most memorable action sequences.

The movie also succeeds because it embraces what has always defined Spider-Man. Beneath the superhero battles, Easter eggs, and Marvel connections is a story about loneliness, sacrifice, and resilience. Peter may be capable of saving countless lives, but he continues to struggle with saving his own happiness. That emotional core recalls the timeless appeal of Spider-Man across every generation—from Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield to Tom Holland.

Longtime Marvel fans will also appreciate the film’s abundance of comic book references, hidden details, and carefully placed Easter eggs. Yet even with its connections to the wider MCU, Brand New Day never feels like setup for future projects. Instead, it remains firmly focused on Peter Parker’s personal journey while naturally opening the door for what’s next.

Rating: 4.5/5

With its emotional storytelling, outstanding performances, exhilarating action, and confident direction, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ delivers everything fans could hope for from a Spider-Man film. It honors the legacy of previous live-action iterations while allowing Tom Holland’s Peter Parker to fully come into his own. Whether you’re a longtime comic book reader or simply a Marvel fan, this is a Spider-Man adventure well worth experiencing on the biggest screen possible.
