Winwyn Marquez urges government to prioritize basic services over technology push

Actress and beauty queen Winwyn Marquez has shared her concerns about the country’s current situation, urging the government to focus on addressing the basic needs of Filipinos before prioritizing emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI).

In a Facebook post, Marquez said the country’s most pressing concerns remain the issues that directly affect the daily lives of ordinary citizens. She pointed to the rising cost of electricity, inadequate water supply in some communities, and the long-standing need for improved irrigation systems to support the agricultural sector.

While acknowledging the importance of AI and other technological advancements in driving national progress, Marquez said these should not take precedence if essential public services remain inadequate.

According to the actress, ensuring food security, reliable access to clean water, stronger agricultural support, and dependable electricity should remain at the forefront of government priorities.

Marquez also highlighted the Philippines’ rich natural resources, saying the country continues to face challenges in protecting its forests, mangroves, fisheries, and agricultural lands. She called for stronger programs aimed at environmental conservation, the expansion of irrigation systems, improvements in water distribution, and the delivery of affordable and reliable electricity to communities.

She further emphasized the importance of listening to the concerns of the public, expressing hope that government initiatives will reflect the needs and realities experienced by many Filipinos.

“The projects we pursue should address the real needs of the people,” Marquez said in essence, stressing that development should be measured by improvements in citizens’ quality of life.

Her remarks come amid ongoing national discussions about the growing role of artificial intelligence and digital innovation in government and industry. While supportive of technological advancement, Marquez maintained that meaningful progress begins with addressing the country’s fundamental challenges.

As of writing, government officials have not publicly responded to Marquez’s statement. Her post has since generated discussions online, with many netizens sharing their own views on balancing technological innovation with investments in essential public services and infrastructure.
