VMX continues to diversify its slate of bold stories, this time dipping into Filipino provincial folklore and the enduring belief in faith healers with its latest original film, ‘Haplos ni Milagros’.
Starring Vern Kaye, John Mark Marcia, Anya Austria, Honey Abe, and newcomer Mauro Salas, the Christopher Novabos-directed film puts an intriguing twist on the familiar faith-healer narrative: its titular character possesses a miraculous gift that comes with one crucial condition.
Milagros must remain pure and innocent. Once she falls in love and loses her virginity, her healing powers could disappear.
For Vern, who plays the mysterious healer, her character’s sheltered upbringing becomes both a blessing and a potential source of trouble.
That “bane” arrives in the form of Erwin, played by John Mark Marcia.
Erwin is a married city man suffering from erectile dysfunction, a condition that has gradually taken a toll on his marriage to Olive, played by Anya Austria.
Desperate to save his marriage, Erwin travels to the province after learning about Milagros and her supposedly miraculous ability to heal illnesses that conventional methods could not cure.
But his search for a cure soon becomes much more complicated.
As Milagros continues treating him, Erwin develops an attraction toward the sheltered healer. What begins as gratitude eventually grows into desire, placing Milagros in a dangerous position where falling for him could mean sacrificing the very gift that made her revered in her community.
And Erwin is not the only one whose desires threaten to complicate matters.
While he searches for healing elsewhere, his wife Olive has been dealing with years of emotional and physical frustration in their marriage. She eventually finds comfort in Jomar, their driver, played by VMX newcomer Mauro Salas.
Mauro may be new to acting, but he is no stranger to being in front of an audience.
Before entering showbiz, he participated in pageants and worked as a model. Haplos ni Milagros now serves as one of his first opportunities to introduce himself to a wider audience as an actor.
During VMX’s recent back-to-back media conference for ‘Haplos ni Milagros’ and ‘Ang Modista’, the cast also gamely answered some of the entertainment press’ more playful questions.
Vern admitted that while she is comfortable taking on bold projects, she still maintains personal boundaries when it comes to intimate scenes. She nevertheless joined her co-stars in answering questions about indecent proposals, celebrity crushes, and whether they personally believe in faith healers.
Behind the film’s sensual elements, however, is a story rooted in themes that remain familiar in many Filipino communities.
Faith healing and stories of individuals believed to possess supernatural or divine abilities remain deeply embedded in Philippine folklore, particularly in provinces where traditional beliefs can exist alongside Catholic faith and modern medicine.
‘Haplos ni Milagros’ uses that cultural backdrop to explore temptation, intimacy, betrayal, and the complicated idea of healing.
While Erwin initially believes that fixing his physical condition could also repair his marriage, his encounter with Milagros forces him to confront whether the relationship he is trying to save has already reached its end.
Milagros, meanwhile, faces an equally difficult choice: protect the gift that has defined her life or give in to emotions she has never been allowed to experience.
The film ultimately asks whether healing always means restoring what has been broken—or whether, sometimes, it means having the courage to choose an entirely different life.
Directed by Christopher Novabos, ‘Haplos ni Milagros’ begins streaming exclusively on VMX on August 14.
