During a YouTube interview on Friday, June 17, the Unkabogable Vice Ganda admitted he had a hard time penetrating television as a comedian, thus giving up on his dream to become TV’s Queen of Comedy.
“Sinuko ko na,” responded Vice when celebrity impersonator KaladKaren asked him if he still aspires to reach that dream.
Before his fame, the It’s Showtime host was one of the most-sought stand-up comedians in the comedy bars like Punchline and The Library. However, with his colleagues like Ethel Booba, Chokoleit, and Ate Gay, among others, already appearing on TV shows, Vice thought that he was not “mainstream material.”
“So parang sabi ko doors for me really are not opening sa mainstream TV. Maybe I’m not destined to be there.”
He settled on being a stand-up comedian, pointing out that during that time, he was contented in his “kingdom ko, ito ang turf [ko].”
“Parang I will just enjoy being a big fish in a small pond than one of the small fish in a big ocean,” added the comedian host. “Hanggang comedy bar lang ako pero reyna ako dito, gagalingan ko dito. I will keep the crown.”
But eventually, there were other plans for him. In 2009, he had his first acting gig in the ABS-CBN fantasy series Dyosa followed by another supporting role in Maging Sino Ka Man: Ang Pagbabalik.
That same year, he was chosen to be one of the hosts for the noontime show It’s Showtime which further elevated his career.
Apart from being a TV host, he starred in eight films and released an album called Lakas Tama.
“Noong hindi ko na siya inaasahan, hindi ko na siya pinagpapatayan, bigla naman siyang nangyari. So you just have to trust the process, you just have to trust the plans of God.”
