Emille Joson talks about filmmaking, success, and ‘Adivino’

In a recent interview, Emille Joson, renowned filmmaker and rising star in the industry, opened up about her journey, her acclaimed film ‘Adivino,’ and her views on various aspects of filmmaking and fame.

The interview commenced with Joson discussing her thoughts on films ahead of their time, mentioning both local and Hollywood productions that she believes have pushed boundaries and tackled relevant themes. She highlighted the importance of portraying characters with depth and complexity, especially in the context of the Me Too movement.

“By not portraying men as entirely evil, you should include two different characters in one film: the good guy who protects women plus LGBT and the bad guy who doesn’t. Because feminism is all about equality, it’s not a hate movement.”

When asked about the inspiration behind ‘Adivino,’ Joson delved into various influences, including historical events and personal observations. She emphasized the importance of crafting intricate narratives that challenge audiences and provoke thought.

Reflecting on the unexpected success of ‘Adivino’ among Western horror fans, Joson expressed her surprise and gratitude, acknowledging the impact the film had on her career and personal life.

The conversation also touched on Joson’s collaboration with seasoned professionals, such as cinematographer Direk Ludwig Peralta, and her experiences navigating the industry as a young filmmaker.

Regarding her nomination for the Metro Manila Film Festival, Joson shared her initial reaction and the subsequent impact on her career trajectory.

“I last minute found out from the people at ABS-CBN Star Cinema rin because they just found out as well that two of their movies are also nominated, Segundamno and Enteng ng Ina Mo. I remember I was with Sir Mac Merla and other Star Adproms. We were on our way to Subic for the Enteng (the making) shoot that will be aired on the weekend on Cinema One. Then a crew member came to me and said, “Beh, parang nominated ka rin. Ikaw ata ‘yung pinakita na nasa news, name mo ata yun!” So akala ko chinacharot lang ako, then I got an email from Direk Mark Meily himself. Ayun na nga. Totoo pala!

Joson discussed her decision to pursue freelance opportunities after her time with ABS-CBN, emphasizing the importance of artistic freedom and collaboration.
