Charo Santos recalls how Dolphy almost cost her job—But gained ABS-CBN a 17-year hit

Screen icon and ABS-CBN executive Charo Santos recently shared a remarkable behind-the-scenes story about how her career was nearly derailed in the early ’90s—all in the name of bringing back the late King of Comedy, Dolphy, to primetime television.

In a now-viral video posted on her social media accounts, Santos recounted the time Dolphy returned from the United States and reached out to her, expressing his desire to return to television. At the time, Santos was a rising executive at ABS-CBN and had long admired Dolphy’s work on ‘Buhay Artista’ and ‘John & Marsha’, and had even worked with him as his leading lady in ‘My Juan En Only’.

Determined to give the veteran comedian a new platform, Santos pitched the idea to her boss—only to be met with skepticism.

“‘Sir, ibalik natin si Mang Dolphy,’” Santos recalled saying. “‘Ano ka ba, hindi ka ba nag-iisip? Tatlong taon nang wala ‘yan, nakalimutan na ‘yan ng tao,’” her boss responded.

Unfazed, Santos stood her ground. “‘As far as I’m concerned, he is the King of Comedy,’” she told him. When warned of the risk involved, she boldly said, “‘Sir, ‘pag hindi nag-rate ‘yang programa ni Dolphy, you can fire me.’”

She admitted she was stunned by her own words. “Parang natulala ako, sabi ko, ‘Bakit ko ba sinabi ‘yon?’ Wala nang urungan ito,” she said.

Putting everything on the line, Santos assembled a top-tier production team and carefully curated the cast. Her boss then gave her a personal test—if he didn’t laugh within the first five minutes of the pilot, she should hand in her resignation.

“Sa awa ng Diyos, in the first five minutes, nadinig namin ‘yung halakhak ng aming top boss,” she said. “Umuwi na po ako dahil alam ko, may trabaho pa rin ako.”

The show that resulted was ‘Home Along Da Riles’, which premiered in 1992. Dolphy played Kevin Cosme, a widowed father raising his family along a railroad track. The series quickly soared to the top of the ratings and held its place as the number one primetime program on ABS-CBN for an astounding 17 years. Nova Villa also starred in the show as Dolphy’s onscreen partner.

Reflecting on the show’s legacy, Santos concluded: “And sa pilot episode pa lang po ng Home Along Da Riles, it became the number one program on primetime in ABS-CBN and it remained number one for the next 17 years. Kayo, ano ang memories niyo of Home Along Da Riles?”

In December 2024, several original cast members teased the possible return of ‘Home Along Da Riles’ in 2025, hinting at a nostalgic revival that fans can look forward to.
