LifeScience Institute successfully brought to the fore the role of Functional Medicine in addressing complex chronic and noncommunicable diseases in a recently concluded conference held at the Enderun Colleges in Taguig City.

The Advancing Functional Medicine (AFM) conference, which was the first of its kind in the Southeast Asian region, was in collaboration with the Institute of Functional Medicine (IFM).

According to the World Health Organization, eight out of 10 deaths in the region were caused by NCDs such as chronic respiratory diseases, cancers, and cardiovascular diseases. Leaders from the Pacific have declared these a health and economic crisis and a threat to human development. In response to the NCD epidemic in the Pacific, LSI brought together IFM’s esteemed faculty to discuss Functional Medicine and its role in addressing chronic NCDs.

Hundreds of delegates from the United States, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, India, Singapore and Philippines attended the two-day conference. The speakers at the event included IFM faculty members Dr. Lisa Portera-Perry and Dr. Michael Stone, and IFM Executive Director of Medical Education Dr. Robert Luby.

Through its theme “Uncovering the Interconnections Between Inflammation, the Gastrointestinal Tract and Toxic Exposure”, the conference emphasized how Functional Medicine presents a new perspective in dealing with an individual’s well-being by determining how and why illnesses occur instead of simply addressing the symptoms caused by chronic disease.

The conference also introduced different ways to unravel the interconnections of symptoms, lifestyle factors and diagnosis of a patient’s disease or chronic condition.

“This is the beginning of the next era of Functional and Lifestyle Medicine changing this part of the world,” said Dr. Kristi Hughes, pioneer in the field of Functional Medicine.

To continue LSI’s thrust of purveying Functional Medicine, LSI will be holding the Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice (AFMCP) Conference on May 7-11, 2019. Participants of the conference have already shown interest in the upcoming AFMCP by signing up for the event right after AFM.

For more information on the recently concluded AFM and for inquiries about the upcoming AFMCP, you may contact LSI at (0917) 829 7075 or visit www.lsi-sea.org.
