Kiko Pangilinan on ‘Toni Talks’: Astronaut Dreams, Mega Love Story, and His 2025 Senate Comeback

In a heartfelt interview on Toni Talks, former Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan gave viewers a rare glimpse into his life’s most intimate moments and pivotal choices. From childhood dreams of becoming an astronaut to falling in love with the megastar Sharon Cuneta while working as a lawyer at ABS-CBN, Kiko laid it all on the table. To the Moon and Beyond

It turns out, before politics and showbiz, Kiko Pangilinan was just a starry-eyed six-year-old dreaming of space travel. “I watched the Apollo moon landings, and I was hooked,” he recalled with a nostalgic smile. “I told myself, ‘One day, I’m going to be an astronaut.’”

But his childhood dream of exploring the cosmos soon gave way to a different kind of adventure: public service.
“I realized that while I couldn’t reach for the moon, I could still make a difference here on Earth,” he shared. “And that’s when I started to think about leadership and service.”

Kiko credits his parents for shaping his values and igniting his passion for public service. His father was a civil engineer an entrepreneur, and his mother was a dedicated public-school teacher. Both parents were deeply involved in community work.

“My dad showed me the value of hard work and perseverance, a deep love for country, a sense of duty to help those with less; while my mom taught me compassion, service to others, and the power of prayer,” he said, his voice tinged with emotion.

“I saw my mom help students and neighbors without expecting anything in return,” he continued. “It was her quiet leadership that made me realize that you don’t need a title to serve. That’s where my journey began.”From Political Defeat to Winning in Love

After a 4-1/2 term as a “konsehal” in Quezon City while completing his law studies at UP, Kiko’s first foray into major league politics didn’t go as planned. He ran for a congressional seat in Quezon City and lost.
“It was a painful defeat,” he admitted. “I felt like my dreams were crushed.”

But life had a surprising twist in store. ABS-CBN approached him to co-host the legal talk show “Hoy Gising!”, which catapulted him into the limelight. It was on this show that Kiko first crossed paths with the megastar Sharon Cuneta.

“She was a guest promoting one of her movies, and I was completely starstruck,” he confessed with a laugh. “I thought to myself, ‘Do I even have a chance?’”

But love has a way of rewriting the script. “I kept showing up, making her laugh, and eventually, she said yes,” Kiko revealed, his eyes lighting up. “I lost in politics, but I won in love. That’s the best plot twist of my life.”

A Vice Presidential Journey and an Unfinished Mission

Kiko was all set to run for reelection in the Senate in 2022. But then came a call from former Vice President Leni Robredo. “She asked me to be her running mate two days before I planned to file for reelection to the Senate,” he shared. “It was a tough decision, but I believed in her vision for the country.”

Although the tandem didn’t make it, Kiko doesn’t see it as a defeat. “I stood by my principles. I learned so much from that journey,” he reflected. “Leadership isn’t just about winning; it’s about standing up for what you believe in.”

A Soft Spot for Farmers

In one of the most emotional moments of the interview, Kiko spoke about his advocacy for farmers. “I didn’t start out in politics thinking I’d focus on agriculture,” he admitted. “But then a typhoon hit my farm and wiped out everything. I experienced firsthand what farmers go through and it changed me.”

His personal loss turned into a mission to fight for agricultural reforms. “It’s not just about food security; it’s about justice for our farmers,” he said passionately. “Their struggle became my fight.”

With the May elections on the horizon, Kiko is ready to return to the Senate. “I’ve served without any taint of graft or corruption,” he emphasized. “I believe in integrity, and I think the Filipino people are looking for leaders they can trust.”

When asked about his political comeback, Kiko was optimistic. “I still have dreams for this country,” he declared. “I want to fight for our farmers, improve education, and bring about good governance.”

A Story Far from Over

As the interview wrapped up, Toni couldn’t resist asking, “Do you still dream about becoming an astronaut?”
Kiko laughed, his eyes sparkling. “Not anymore. My feet are firmly on the ground now… but my head is still in the stars.”

With his integrity intact, his heart full of purpose, and his family’s unwavering support, Kiko Pangilinan is ready to take on the next chapter of his journey.

And as the 2025 elections draw closer, one thing is clear: his story is far from over.
